The LONG ISLAND CONTRACTORS ASSOCIATION and OPERATING ENGINEERS LOCAL 138 are buying what they call "an exclusive series of paid messages that include a series of two-minute question-and-answer sessions" between LOCAL 138 head JOHN DUFFY, LICA Dir. MARC HERBST, DOCKBUILDERS LOCAL 1456 head CHARLES HARKIN and "a WINS broadcast journalist." The segments are aimed at "publicly explor(ing) the failing commitment to protecting the region's bridges and roads," according to a press release from the LICA and the engineers' union.
DUFFY said, "Our message is about 30% unemployment among our construction trades. This is about looted government trust funds that were supposed to be set aside as an exclusive funding source for road repairs. This is about holding people accountable for ensuring LONG ISLAND will receive its fair share of funding, given the amount of taxes we pay to the state."
HERBST said, "The heavy construction industry recognizes that in this Information Age we have an obligation to use every medium possible to get our message out. That includes e-mail, FACEBOOK, news conferences, opinion essays and paid messaging on a broadcast station that is listened to by every significant opinion maker in the region. That would be 1010 WINS. We intend to make sure everyone in the region knows what's at stake and where the governmental failures are."
"This is an unprecedented communications effort," said HERBST. "But then again, these are unprecedented times and we need to publicly advocate on behalf of the taxpayers' biggest investment -- our public infrastructure."
