They did it -- the effort by BONNEVILLE Talk KIRO-F (NEWS TALK 97.3 KIRO FM)/SEATTLE, midday host DAVE ROSS, and the station's MYNORTHWEST.COM to save this year's SEATTLE 4th of JULY fireworks at GAS WORKS PARK have succeeded, with former KIRO weekend food show co-host TOM DOUGLAS leading the pledges. DOUGLAS, a local celebrity chef, opened the pledging with a $5,000 commitment and challenge to business leaders in the area to follow suit, and ROSS added his own $1,000. By 5p, the "Rockets Red Glare Pledge-a-thon" had raised $80,000 from local companies towards the $500,000 goal.
That's when the big money kicked in, with MICROSOFT and STARBUCKS each pledging to match $125,000 and PAUL ALLEN's VULCAN adding $50,000. The drive reached its $500,000 goal just before 9a TODAY.
"I am amazed, but not surprised, by the overwhelming community support for an event that all of us now own," said ROSS.
"Hats off to TOM DOUGLAS and his many friends in the business community," said BONNEVILLE SEATTLE VP and Market Manager CARL GARDNER. "Without them, this could not have happened. We were privileged to provide the megaphone, but it's the donors who are the heroes today."
