OHANA BROADCAST COMPANY has launched a new Hawaiian music format on its KMKK/KAUNAKAKAI, MOLOKAI, HI, with the slogan "HAWAII'S NA MELE 102.3." The station serves MOLOKAI, MAUI, LANAI, and the eastern and windward coasts of OAHU. OHANA, part of JASON WOLFF's FRONTIER RADIO INVESTORS, was formed after the split of the partners of VISIONARY RELATED ENTERTAINMENT, LLC into two separate groups. The station launched FRIDAY (4/2) and is running commercial-free to start.
OHANA Director of Programming RICK THOMAS said, "It was very important to me to do a station that is distinctly Hawaiian. It's a broad mix, a good variety. From UNCLE GABBY and the SONS OF HAWAII to today's contemporary Hawaiian sounds, connecting generations. We honor both our Hawaiian music roots as well as the musicians of today that don't seem to get much love o the other radio stations."
DEVON NEKOBA is on board to host afternoons and BRANDON LEE is hosting nights, with other talent to be named later. THOMAS said, "These guys have a real love for the music and culture and that is a key element. It's got to be delivered from the heart."
