MALCOLM MCLAREN, the self-promoting impresario who managed the SEX PISTOLS and later recorded his own music, died TODAY (4/8) of mesothelioma.
MCLAREN, 64, who had been the co-owner with then-girlfriend VIVIENNE WESTWOOD of a clothing store in LONDON that provided outfits to, among others, the NEW YORK DOLLS, served as manager of the SEX PISTOLS -- he and the band differed over whether he created the band or was approached by them to be the manager-- and was behind the group's outrageous image and marketing; he later split from the band amidst acrimony and lost a lawsuit to lead singer JOHN LYDON over rights and royalties.
He recorded albums as a solo artist as well, with U.K. singles "Buffalo Gals" and "Double Dutch" becoming top-10 hits on the British charts. More recently, he hosted shows for BBC RADIO 2 in 2006-07, was a producer for the film version of "FAST FOOD NATION," and participated on British celebrity reality TV shows, including "THE BARON" and "BIG BROTHER: CELEBRITY HIJACK."
