WRKO's Finneran Stirs Up Trouble With 'Whale' Comment

Now it's TOM FINNERAN's turn to crete controversy at ENTERCOM Talk WRKO-A/BOSTON, as the BOSTON HERALD's JESSICA HESLAM reports on a disparaging comment the morning host made about suspended afternoon host HOWIE CARR's producer on FRIDAY. After FINNERAN's producer BILL COOKSEY imitated CARR referring to his producer NANCY SHACK (known as "SANDY" on-air), FINNERAN said "Click on the jumping whale," a reference to an on-air promo for a station cruise promotion. When co-host TODD FEINBURG asked what FINNERAN said, COOKSEY repeated it, and FINNERAN added, "COOKSEY's been saying that for six months."
Market Manager JULIE KAHN told HESLAM that the station is handling the matter internally, while FINNERAN's former co-host WENDY MURPHY told HESLAM that she thinks FINNERAN shouldn't be punished for the remark as former midday host JOHN DEPETRO was (DEPETRO was fired in 2006 for calling a gubernatorial candidate a "fat lesbian"). MURPHY said, "I just don't think it's worth punishing somebody because you call someone fat." CARR, who has been critical of FINNERAN, was suspended FRIDAY for making disparaging comments about the station.
WRKO PR representative GEORGE REGAN said that the incident was "an internal matter that is being dealt with."
