Duquesne: 'About Three' Bidders For WDUQ/Pittsburgh

DUQUESNE UNIVERSITY continues to shop its noncommercial News-Talk-Jazz WDUQ/PITTSBURGH, reports the PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW, and Pres. CHARLES DOUGHERTY tells the paper that the school is negotiating with "about three" potential buyers for the outlet -- none a university. One of the possible buyers, DOUGHERTY acknowledged, is PITTSBURGH PUBLIC MEDIA, a local group formed by WDUQ Director and GM SCOTT HANLEY.
DOUGHERTY said that the station can keep the station if a suitable bid isn't found, but that the possibility of having to reimburse the CORPORATION FOR PUBLIC BROADCASTING for almost $7 million in grants if the station is sold to an operator that does not keep the station public is not a deterrent to a sale. "That money's all been spent on the operation of the station over a period of years, so they received value for their investment," said DOUGHTERTY to the paper. "We don't see that they have any claim on the future of the station."
