June 3, 2010 at 1:33 PM (PT)
GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF/DETROIT morning team DREW & MIKE called MLB Umpire JAMES JOYCE to discuss the WEDNESDAY, JUNE 2nd call he made in which TIGER pitcher ARMANDO GALARRAGA went into the 9th inning pitching a perfect game against the CLEVELAND INDIANS. On what would have been the final out of the inning, sealing the perfect game, JOYCE called the INDIANS base runner safe despite replays showing the runner was clearly out.
They spoke at length with JOYCE about the call he made, for which he accepted full responsibility for making a mistake that cost GALARRAGA a perfect game. They also discussed the threats that were being made against JOYCE and his family as well as the remarkable show of sportsmanship that GALARRAGA, TIGERS Manager JIM LEYLAND, and the TIGER team as a whole showed in light of the obvious mistake. JOYCE discussed the fact that he will be the home plate umpire in today’s game between the TIGERS and INDIANS and the crowd reception that he was expecting.
