This past weekend, the GRAND OLE OPRY in NASHVILLE, TN continued its 85th birthday celebration by being presented a one-of-a-kind cake by CHARM CITY CAKES, which is based in BALTIMORE, MD. Chef DUFF GOLDMAN and Sous Chef GEOF MANTHORNE of the FOOD NETWORK’s “Ace of Cakes” arrived at the OPRY, which was held at the RYMAN AUDITORIUM, via RV as part of a road trip for the show that was taped for an episode to air in the FALL.
The chefs unloaded the cake pieces and set them up in a backstage dressing room when they arrived. They assembled the cake during the OPRY show and finished just two minutes before the reveal on stage.
The four-foot-tall cake, in the shape of the famous OPRY mic stand and placed on a replica of the iconic circle of wood from the stage of the RYMAN, was flanked on either side by guitars.
Once the presentation was made, OPRY member CHARLEY PRIDE invited GOLDMAN and MANTHORNE to join him on his closing song, “Kaw-Liga.” GOLDMAN played bass and MANTHORNE joined on acoustic guitar. They both play in a band when not at their day jobs as chefs.
