JERRY BROWN, running for a return to SACRAMENTO as the Democratic candidate for Governor of CALIFORNIA, was caught making controversial comments comparing Republican opponent MEG WHITMAN's ad campaign to Nazi propagamda in a conversation with a reporter for CBS RADIO News KCBS-A-KFRC-F/SAN FRANCISCO, and BROWN is crying foul, claining that the conversation was off the record.
BROWN, currently CALIFORNIA's Attorney General, ran into KCBS' DOUG SOVERN while BROWN was jogging and SOVERN was hiking on MEMORIAL DAY weekend. SOVERN quoted BROWN as saying "You know, by the time she's done with me, two months from now, I'll be a child-molesting ... She'll have people believing whatever she wants about me. It's like GOEBBELS. GOEBBELS invented this kind of propaganda. He took control of the whole world. She wants to be president. That's her ambition, the first woman president. That's what this is all about."
POLITICO reports that SOVERN posted the quotes on his blog, promting BROWN to complain to crosstown CITADEL Talk KGO-A that the comments were " just a private conversation. Nobody had a pencil. Nobody said, 'By the way, is this a statement that you're making to the public?'"
BROWN retracted the comments after they became public. SOVERN told AP that BROWN was a public figure in a public place and did not ask to be off the record.
