More operational mergers are coming to U.K. commercial radio in the wake of GLOBAL RADIO's consolidation of 35 of its local HEART stations into 15 regional versions. GUARDIAN MEDIA GROUP announced that it will also merge its regional soft AC SMOOTH RADIO stations, except for the SMOOTH station in GLASGOW, into a single national network based in MANCHESTER.
Five stations, which already simulcast much of their schedules, will be merged under the plan, including LONDON, the NORTH-WEST, the NORTH-EAST, the WEST MIDLANDS, and the EAST MIDLANDS. The EAST MIDLANDS studio in NOTTINGHAM will be shut down, and the others significantly cut, with 40-60 jobs likely to be cut in the transition.
Meanwhile, GLOBAL RADIO wasn't finished consolidating, merging its 26 GOLD stations into a national service based in LONDON. The merged GOLD national station launched MONDAY (6/28); most GOLD employees will shift to work on other GLOBAL stations.
