The CRTC has approved changes to the licenses of ROGERS News CKNI (NEWS 91.9)/MONCTON and CHNI (NEWS 88.9)/SAINT JOHN, NB to allow the stations to increase the time devoted to playing music from 10% to 25%. ROGERS told the agency that the change is being requested to save money by eliminating the station's news wheel approach to programming and reduce duplication in programming between the stations. Sister News CJNI (NEWS 95.7)/HALIFAX was not included in the request.
The CRTC also upheld the CANADIAN BROADCAST STANDARDS COUNCIL ruling, released in JANUARY, that sexual innuendo on a segment of DEAN BLUNDELL's show on CORUS Alternative CFNY (102.1 THE EDGE)/TORONTO did not violate the CAB Code of Ethics. "(W)hile the segment in question contained references to sexuality in passing, used euphemisms and had suggestive undertones," wrote the CRTC in its ruling, "there were no descriptions of sexual acts, explicit or otherwise. Only one reference to the act of sex was made and it was not descriptive in any way. Brief references to female body parts were also included, but they were not overtly sexual."
ANTHONY SCHLIEFER has applied to sell all of the shares in 1486781 ONTARIO LTD., licensee of Religion CFWC/BRANTFORD, ON, to KIRK DOUGLAS' DURHAM RADIO for $265,000. The station is also asking the CRTC to delete the condition of its license that restricts it to playing a minimum of 95% non-classic Religious music and flip the station to Rock.
LA RADIO COMMUNAUTAIRE DE LASALLE's French-language Type B community FM CKVL/MONTREAL has received CRTC approval to change its facility to decrease average ERP from 250 to 110 watts but raise the antenna height and thus increase maximum ERP from 250 to 870 watts.
The CRTC also approved SALT SPRING ISLAND RADIO CORPORATION's bid to reduce the power of its Variety CFSI/SALT SPRING ISLAND, BC from 970 to 700 watts.
And the CBC has applied to decrease power of CBF-FM-20/SAINT-DONAT, QC (rebroadcaster of LA PREMIERE CHAINE affiliate CBF-F/MONTREAL) from 11,600 to 10,000 watts at a new site, and to change the primary station for CBF-16/CLOVA, QC; CBF-17/LAC EDOUARD, QC; and CBF-18/PARENT, QC from CBF-F/MONTREAL to CBF-FM-8/TROIS-RIVIERES, QC.
