YESTERDAY, ALL ACCESS reported that RADIO ONE Urban AC WMMJ,(MAGIC 102.3)WASHINGTON D.C.,had "tweaked the format" (NET NEWS 7/14). Now, the station is describing the changes as a new, hybrid Urban format, indeed targeting a younger audience.
Under RADIO ONE SVP/Programming JAY STEVENS and newly appointed OM JAMILLAH MUHAMMED,the station has jettisoned most of its older gold category and has placed its new focus on fresher recurrents, 80’s and 90’s gold. WASHINGTON D.C. got its first taste of the new format FRIDAY morning (7/9) when it debuted with "102 hours of non-stop music". The station went commercial free for that period and returned to its regular format late TUESDAY afternoon (7/13).
Radio vet JOHN MONDS was heard doing afternoons on MAGIC 102.3. It's not the first time WASHINGTON D.C. listeners have heard MONDS dulcet tones. MONDS did mornings on crosstown competitor HOWARD UNIVERSITY Urban AC WHUR, where he teamed with MONIQUE in the late 90s. MONDS continues to be a popular and well-known voice talent, whose career path includes stops in NEW YORK, LOS ANGELES, CHICAGO and DETROIT. He was also the host for AMERICAN URBAN RADIO NETWORKS’ (AURN) USA MUSIC MAGAZINE and KICKIN’ IT AT CHRISTMAS. Most recently MONDS was PD/afternoons at CUMULUS MEDIA Urban AC WRRX (MAGIC 106.1) PENSACOLA, FL.
The jury is still out as to what new hires the station may make and whether or not JOHN MONDS will remain in PM drive.
