SUDAN has shut down BBC Arabic broadcasts on FM in the African nation effective TODAY (8/9), claiming that the BBC breached its accords with the country by bringing in satellite equipment through a diplomatic pouch and doing work in SOUTHERN SUDAN and charity work without government approval.
The BBC broadcasts on FM stations in KHARTOUM, PORT SUDAN, WAD MEDANI, and EL OBEID, reaching a weekly audience of four million. Negotiations are continuing between the BBC and the government to get the programming back on the air on FM, while the broadcasts remain accessible on shortwave, satellite, and online.
