Two men were arrested late SATURDAY night for the stabbing death of TANGIPAHOA PARISH broadcaster RUBE ROGERS, reports WAFB-TV. Police said ERIC LANE MAURER, 31, and his father RICKY MAURER, 51, were arrested just after 11p.
Detectives believe ERIC MAURER stabbed and robbed ROGERS, then fled with his father.
RICKY MAURER will be charged with accessory after the fact for first-degree murder.
Friends and family of the victim said ROGERS raised ERIC MAURER since his teenage years. ROGERS' only surviving child, TERRI BASSEMIER, released a statement about her father.
"The untimely and brutal death of RUBE ROGERS has touched all those who knew him and many who did not," it read. "He loved life and always struggled to help others, even those who least deserved it."
CARL ENNA told ALL ACCESS, "This guy was the franchise for years in SOUTHEAST LOUISIANA. Many of us who started there were tutored by him or influenced by him in some manner. I remember hearing two old guys meet on the street in front of the radio station one day -- they had no idea who I was -- and one said to the other, 'looks like rain today...' to which his friend answered, 'Nope... RUBE said it wasn't gonna rain today...' That's a franchise. We're all shocked at his death but glad law enforcement acted quickly to catch 'em."
