The SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL JOURNALISTS is honoring with its SUNSIHINE AWARD a woman whose son's letters from prison were used in reports by SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA PUBLIC RADIO noncommercial News-Talk KPCC/PASADENA-LOS ANGELES on a prison riot.
CHARLENE "CHARLIE" PADILLA passed her son's letters describing conditions at the the CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE FOR MEN AT CHINO to KPCC, where reporter STEVEN CUEVAS used them as the basis for a three-part series on the events.
Also being honored are THE ADVOCATE (BATON ROUGE), JILL RIEPENHOFF and TODD JONES of the COLUMBUS DISPATCH, and DAVID ANDREATTA of the ROCHESTER DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE. The winners will receive their honors at a banquet on OCTOBER 5th in LAS VEGAS; the award honors contributions in the pursuit of open government.
