FAIRFAX MEDIA Talk 2UE/SYDNEY has lost a defamation lawsuit filed by journalist RAY CHESTERTON over comments on the air by host JOHN LAWS, reports AAP. CHESTERTON was awarded A$90,000 in NEW SOUTH WALES Supreme Court over the AUGUST 2005 broadcast, in which LAWS referred to CHESTERTON's nickname of "ANKLES," an Australian colloquial term considered a rude insult.
LAWS and the station claimed that the broadcast was a response to an "ageist" attack (a "70-year-old disc jockey") on LAWS in CHESTERTON's column for NEWS LTD., but the court rejected that defense.
