Talk Conference Opens With PPM Presentations
October 14, 2010 at 5:19 PM (PT)
The combined TALK SHOW BOOT CAMP and TALK MEDIA CONFERENCE started on THURSDAY in MARINA DEL REY, CA with presentations focused on News, Talk, and Sports stations' performance under the PPM.
ARBITRON's JENNY TSAO opened the conference with an overview of the PPM, explaining the data generated by the meters. The presentation concluded with a contentious back-and-forth with an audience member over the size and manner of PPM sampling, including the length of time each panelist is on the panel. The debate between audience and ARBITRON staffers also included the difference between distribution by household (with all members in the household getting a meter) and by individual, and how the present system, in some audience members' eyes, leaves too much of a market's geographic area uncovered.
More PPM presentations came from ARBITRON's GARY MARINCE, RCS WORLDWIDE's PHILIPPE GENERALI, and DMR's TRIPP ELDREDGE, looking at listening patterns and what makes people turn their radios and stations on and off.
Closing out the first day, CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KFI-A/LOS ANGELES PD ROBIN BERTOLUCCI and CITADEL Talk KGO-A and Talk KSFO-A OM JACK SWANSON joined COX MEDIA's PAUL DOUGLAS on a panel discussing the effect of PPMs on top stations.
