Shocker -- Regis Philbin Announces His Retirement
January 18, 2011 at 8:42 AM (PT)
YESTERDAY (NET NEWS 1/17), the finalists in LIVE! WITH REGIS & KELLY's "Men Of Radio: Co-Host For A Day" contest were announced. TODAY, a bigger surprise comes from the show as REGIS PHILBIN told his audience he plans to call it quits from the show sometime within the next year.
"I don't want to alarm anybody," PHILBIN said, "this will be my last year on the show."
PHILBIN, 79, didn't specify when his last day will be on the show -- which could possibly be as early this summer -- but noted that the timing just felt right.
"It's been a long time," he continued. "It's been 28 years and it was the biggest thrill of my life to come back to NEW YORK, where I grew up as a kid watching TV in the early days, you know -- never even dreaming that I would one day have the ability, or whatever it takes, to get in front of the camera and talk to it. There is a time that everything must come to an end for certain people on camera -- especially certain old people!"
PHILBIN has been in television for more than 40 years, the last 22 in syndication with this show.
Are any of next week's "Men Of Radio" guest co-hosts planning on using the opportunity as an audition for the full-time gig?
