Howard Stern: 'I Almost Quit Radio'
January 19, 2011 at 4:24 AM (PT)
HOWARD STERN was the follow-up guest to OPRAH WINFREY on the new "PIERS MORGAN Tonight" show on CNN last night, and said he almost quit his SIRIUS XM RADIO gig last year because he'd achieved everything he wanted to do in radio.
STERN explained it's a "neurotic compulsion" that kept him in his job. "Really, why am I doing this anymore? It makes me crazy. I hate getting up early in the morning, and I don't particularly like doing the show."
STERN explained to MORGAN, "I think it's my identity. Like, this is who I am. This is what I do."
Things heated up when the conversation turned to JAY LENO. STERN said that he didn't approve of LENO's behavior and that he "did a terrible thing to CONAN O'BRIEN." He also claimed LENO "steals a tremendous amount of material."
"JAY is insane," STERN continued. "He's not fit to scrub DAVID LETTERMAN's feet. Yes, I don't know why he's beaten DAVID LETTERMAN in the ratings. It's beyond my comprehension. AMERICA must be filled with morons who at night lay in bed -- the ones who are watching him. They must be in a coma."
Finally turning his sarcasm on the host, STERN quipped, "I want to congratulate you on unseating a 95-year-old man. I like you, I like you on 'America's Got Talent.' I think you're a terrific judge and I think you're a nice man. But who the hell knows what you're gonna do on here? They tell me you're a journalist. My friend, you have a lot to prove here. What's going to happen three months from now when your interviewing SCOTT BATE?"
