So, Who Made Those Hysterical Promo Meets Radio PD Videos?
February 4, 2011 at 4:29 AM (PT)
If you enjoyed the hysterical video that was making the rounds on FACEBOOK and YOUTUBE two weeks ago that showed a hypothetical record promotion visit to a radio station (NET NEWS 1/21) -- and the followup -- where a local 'promo gal' visits the same PD (NET NEWS 1/24), you probably asked, 'who made this?'
ALL ACCESS had to find out.
Turns out a former jock and record rep had the insight to tease his former industry. CHRIS KELLER was best known as KC O'NEIL back in the day.
KELLER told ALL ACCESS, "I had a great fun run in the industry working on air (part-time) at WQXA/HARRISBURG and ROCK 102.1/MILWAUKEE. I started my radio career in HARRISBURG at WINK 104, WNNK in 1989. Then moved on to OCEAN CITY MD, where HITMAN MCKAY took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. In 1994-ish I landed a full-time position with AIR, ACTIVE INDUSTRY RESEARCH, spent many years there, and in '99 moved to L.A. with AIR as National Director of Modern Rock. In 2001, I took a job as regional promotions for EPIC RECORDS, and in 2002 (my last gig in the industry) I became the Regional promo rep for EPIC RECORDS in CHICAGO. JOEL KLAIMAN, POLLY ANTHONY and HILLARY SCHAEV were my champions and made that happen.
"Unfortunately, two years later in 2003/2004 things went bad and my position and market was eliminated (along with many others in the industry). I decided at that time that I had a great run in the industry and during the 'heyday' of radio and records. Conventions, Grammys, exclusive shows, concerts, tours, etc. Loved it. I didn't want to take another gig with another label, so, I took some time off and then got into mortgages as a loan officer here in CHICAGO. That led to my new found passion for real estate and I founded BLUE HARVEST PROPERTIES INC. along with my wife. We buy and sell foreclosures and also flip houses."
Continued KELLER, "I decided out of the blue, I had this creative moment, and just started writing. That is where the 'record guy meets radio guy' bit came from. I just wrote it as I typed off the top of my head and I was recalling all the moments from phone conversations with radio guys, meetings, and just how ridiculous it was sometimes. In closing, those 15 years were the best times of my life in the industry, and I thank BRUCE TYLER and my good friend ANDY ARNOLD for showing me the ins and outs of the business, and for JOEL KLAIMAN and HILARY for giving the me shot at SONY/EPIC. I am grateful for everyone who I met over the years from guys in BOISE to the big wigs in NYC and L.A."
The next question is -- is KELLER planning a part 3? Let us know below if you'd like to see that.
