Last month, we looked at how stations that flipped to all-CHRISTMAS music showed their PPM strength. Now, we have a recap of JANUARY's PPM market highlights, compiled by dmr for ALL ACCESS and powered by XTrends, radio's #1 PPM and diary analysis tool.

San Francisco January 2011: The News In San Francisco Is... The News

News/Talk radio made the news in JANUARY in SAN FRANCISCO, taking three of the Top 5 positions P6+. CBS RADIO News KCBS-A was #1 (6.5), while KQED PUBLIC MEDIA Talk KQED-F and ENTERCOM AC KOIT (96.1) tied at #2 (5.2). Coming out of Christmas music programming, KOIT was off 42% from the HOLIDAY rating period.

Top 40s say "what, Christmas?" CBS RADIO Top 40/Mainstream KMVQ (99.7 NOW) (#2) and CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Rhythmic KMEL (#3) made it three straight months of upward movement in the P18-49 demo (see Snapshot Trends below), behind #1Top 40/Rhythmic KYLD (WILD 94.9), which was up slightly in the demo in JANUARY. KMEL was #1 P18-34, while WILD 94.9 was #3 and 99.7 NOW was #5.

P25-54 Risers: 99.7 NOW shot up to #2 (KQED-F was #1) with 20% share growth for the month. KCBS-A was up 22% at #4, tied with KOIT (down 50% from #1 previous month).

Houston January 2011: And Now, Back To Our Previously Scheduled Programming

HOUSTON’s post-Christmas music Top 5 list for JANUARY is almost identical (P6+) to what it looked like in NOVEMBER, pre-jingle. CLEAR CHANNEL AC KODA (SUNNY 99.1) was #1 in JANUARY with 8.3 (though 35% off their HOLIDAY high), followed by #2 RADIO ONE Top 40/Rhythmic KBXX (97.9 THE BOX) with 7.3, #3 CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative KTBZ (94.5 THE BUZZ) with 5.8, and #4 RADIO ONE Urban AC KMJQ (MAJIC 102) with 5.5, all ranked in the same order as they had been in NOVEMBER. The only station new to the Top 5 was #5 COX Country KKBQ (5.2), which had been #7 in NOVEMBER, replacing UNIVISION Spanish Adult Hits KOVE (RECUERDO 106.5) which had been #4t (#10 in JANUARY).

The holidays appeared to continue for KSBJ: KSBJ EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION Contemporary Christian KSBJ bucked the trend of Christmas music stations losing listeners after the holidays, with significant share gains in every key demo in JANUARY. KSBJ doubled its share P18-34, and moved from #15t to #8 with a 50% share increase P25-54.

Atlanta January 2011: V-103, B98.5 Down, But One Still Wins

CBS RADIO Urban WVEE (V-103) was down in almost every key demo in JANUARY, but still held on to the #1 position in ATLANTA P6+ with 9.6. COX RADIO Talk WSB-A moved up to #2 (8.5), replacing COX RADIO AC WSB-F (B98.5), which fell to #7 (5.0), a near 50% share loss since switching off the Christmas music. RADIO ONE Christian Contemporary WPZE (PRAISE 102.5) was #3 with 6.1.

DAVE FM likes the New Year: CBS RADIO Triple A WZGC (DAVE FM) not only had huge ups in all key demos (adding 25-39% share), but also bested its 3-book averages significantly, including a #3 finish P25-54. No other rock stations came close, as CLEAR CHANNEL Rock WKLS (PROJECT 9-6-1) was #13t and CUMULUS Rock WNNX was #19 in the demo.

Top 40s on the move: #3 P18-34 CUMULUS Top 40 WWWQ (Q100), #4 LINCOLN FINANCIAL Adult Top 40 WSTR (STAR 94), and #9 CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40/Rhythmic WWVA (WILD 105.7 & 96.7) grew their share percentage in double digits. All three stations had double digit share percentage growth in P18-49 as well.

Philadelphia January 2011: News, Rock, Country Looking Good In The New Year In Philadelphia

Like many of its Christmas music-playing brethren around the country, WEAZ RADIO INC. AC WBEB (B101) lost almost half of its P6+ share in JANUARY, falling from #1 to #2 (8.1) behind #1 CBS RADIO News KYW-A (10.0), which added 45% to its share for the month. CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WDAS was #3 (6.5).

News, Rock and Country bounce back: GREATER MEDIA Rock WMMR, CLEAR CHANNEL Alternative WRFF (RADIO 104.5), and BEASLEY Country WXTU all had big growth- greater than 20% P6+, P18-34, and P25-54 for each station. KYW’s share was up 40% or more in every key demo.

CLEAR CHANNEL Top 40 WIOQ (Q102) was up 20% P18-34(#2), while CLEAR CHANNEL Urban WUSL (POWER 99) and BEASLEY Top 40/Rhythmic WRDW (WIRED 96.5) were both down marginally, tied in the demo at #5.
