THE HILL is reporting that the WHITE HOUSE is considering naming FCC Chairman JULIUS GENACHOWSKI as Secretary of Commerce to replace GARY LOCKE, who appears to be ticketed to replace JON HUNTSMAN JR. as Ambassador to CHINA when HUNTSMAN departs for a run for the REPUBLICAN nomination for President. GENACHOWSKI's name is on a short list along with U.S. Trade Representative RON KIRK for the Commerce job, the paper says.
"He's not coming late to the party on spending time with CEOs and the private sector," an anonymous prominent Democrat told THE HILL of GENACHOWSKI. "He's been doing that for two years. What people on the far left gave him grief for is actually an asset to being Commerce secretary." The move would also remove GENACHOWSKI from the battle over Net Neutrality, which has become extremely contentious and has marked GENACHOWSKI's tenure at the Commission as one of political strife.
Meanwhile, THE HILL adds that with the coming departure of Democratic Commissioner MICHAEL COPPS from the FCC, JESSICA ROSENWORCEL, the top telecommunications aide to Sen. JAY ROCKEFELLER (D-WV), is the likely pick for COPPS' position and could also be a possible FCC Chair if GENACHOWSKI goes to Commerce.
