THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME opened its doors to NEIL DIAMOND, ALICE COOPER, TOM WAITS, DARLENE LOVE, DR. JOHN and LEON RUSSELL last night. Many of the folks introducing the inductees had fun at the star's expense.
When PAUL SIMON inducted NEIL DIAMOND, SIMON pondered why the honor took so long. "Six words," he said, before quoting the title of DIAMOND's hit with BARBRA STREISAND, "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore."
In introducing ALICE COOPER, ROB ZOMBIE said, "They were more than a band. They were more like a murderous band of drag queens - in a good way."
The 27th annual ceremony also honored NEW ORLEANS mainstay DR. JOHN, the 60s girl group queen DARLENE LOVE and TOM WAITS, who said "They say I have no hits and I'm difficult to work with -- and they say it like this is a bad thing."
ELEKTRA RECORDS founder JAC HOLZMAN and SPECIALTY RECORDS founder ART RUPE also were inducted, in the non-performer category.
