Bluegrass Singer Hazel Dickens Passes Away At Age 75

Bluegrass singer HAZEL DICKENS passed away on FRIDAY (4/22) from complications of pneumonia. She was 75. DICKENS was born in MERCER COUNTY, WV, one of 11 children to a mining family. She was known to be an advocate of the coal miners.
HAZEL was a part of the bluegrass duo HAZEL & ALICE with Alice GERRARD, and HAZEL also performed with MIKE SEEGER and the GREENBRIAR BOYS. She went solo in 1973 and her music appeared in “Harlem County, U.S.A.”. In the movies “Matewan” and “Songcatcher,” DICKENS appeared as a singer.
She was inducted into the WEST VIRGINIA MUSIC HALL OF FAME and earned a NATIONAL HERITAGE FELLOWSHIP.
