Early WEDNESDAY (8/17), ROGERS BROADCASTING flipped CFUN/CHILLIWACK, BC from Classic Hits to Top 40 as "SONiC," playing 10,000 songs commercial-free.
From a press release posted on the station's new website, the station is "super-serving listeners in CHILLIWACK at 107.5, 92.5 in ABBOTSFORD and 104.9 in VANCOUVER." VP/GM GEOFF POULTON states, "SONiC speaks to a younger audience and represents a commitment to the next generation of listeners who will help grow the future of radio in our markets. There is a huge appetite for new music, and this format will better serve listeners in our communities."
The station goes one step further, by vowing that no other station can offer "a commitment to SONiC’s listeners to discover and play new music first, and always run fewer commercials" a pledge referred to in that release and elsewhere on the site as the "SONiC PROMISE."
Gone with the format flip are station vets KELLY LATREMOUILLE and PAM STEVENS, as well as PM-driver TARZAN DAN. POULTON tells ALL ACCESS, "We have our first jock, RYDER, set to join for mornings from (HARVARD Top 40) CFWD (WIRED 96.3)/SASKATOON, and HALIFAX club DJ JEREMY "DJ NO LOVE" SLATTERY will be brought in as APD/MD." In the meantime, recruiting continues as the station plans to be fully staffed and live every day, 6a-1a.
