2015 Worldwide Radio Summit Backstage Podcast: Interview With Ryan Wild, Music Director Of Indie/Alternative Formats At AOL Radio
October 20, 2015
At the 2015 Worldwide Radio Summit last spring, I sat down with Ryan Wild, the Music Director of Indie/Alternative at AOL Radio and, at the time, also the OM/PD and WZSR & WFXF in Chicago. You can now listen to the interview as the seventh episode of our podcast series featuring leaders in the radio broadcasting industry, including air talent, executives, record label representatives, and more.
The Worldwide Radio Summit is a multi-day conference, hosted by All Access and A&R Worldwide, where radio broadcasters and music industry executives get together to exchange ideas. (You can find details on the 2016 conference here.)

Episode #7: Ryan Wild, Music Director of Indie/Alternative Formats at AOL Radio
Ryan Wild is not only the Music Director of Indie/Alternative at AOL, but when we recorded this interview he was also the OM/PD of two terrestrial Chicago stations, WZSR-FM and WFXF-FM. He has since been hired by NRG to be the Operations Manager of Classic Rock KOOO-FM, Hot AC KQKQ-FM, and Urban CHR KOPW-FM.
Here's what we talked about:
- On average week, Ryan adds records to 15-20 radio stations
- The AOL data suggests that terrestrial radio bails on records early
- Unlike terrestrial radio, listeners can skip songs on AOL radio
- AOL Radio has a mobile app (iOS and Android)
- Ryan works closely with Mary McCann at AOL
Special thanks to my producer, James Clausen.
