Detroit: Play Ball!
For the fourth straight survey, CBS RADIO News WWJ-A took top honors in the MOTOR CITY (8.2-8.5). The station has come a long way in a year considering last APRIL it was sitting at #3 with a 5.6 share. CCM+E Urban AC WMXD (MIX) is on a serious four-book tear, picking up over two shares of listening since the HOLIDAY book. This time, the station posted its highest total in over a year (6.4-6.5) to move from #3 into a tie at #2 with CBS RADIO Country WYCD, which had its best book since DECEMBER (6.3-6.5) to move up from #4. Cluster partner CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC was down for the second book in a row to slip from #2 to #4. With the TIGERS poised for a return to the postseason, anticipation translated into listening for CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET), which scored its best book since NOVEMBER (4.3-6.1) to move up the standings from #9 to #5.
CUMULUS Hot AC WDVD is on a three-book slide and fell from #5 to #7 (5.6-4.8). The combination of the RED WINGS’ pursuit of LORD STANLEY’S cup with the return of the boys of summer, allowed WXYT-F to pick up an additional two share points and rocket from a tie at #3 to #1 25-54. WMXD was also on fire as it scored its fourth straight strong upwardly mobile book to remain at #2. WYCD had its best showing since DECEMBER to claim #3 all to its lonesome. On the other hand, WDVD had its lowest monthly total since SEPTEMBER to end a three-book run at #1 and fall to #4. GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF was solid and steady at #5 while CCM+E Urban WJLB slipped a bit to fall from #5 to #7.
In a strange astral convergence of ratings karma, the two stations that were tied at #1 18-34 last month are tied again. Both stations experienced the exact same ratings decline at the exact time. This could be the makings of a TLC series. Oh, the two stations were WJLB and CCM+E Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955). WYCD came galloping up on the outside, rising from #5 to #3 -- regaining most of the high ranking it achieved in FEBRUARY. WMXD has almost doubled its share since the HOLIDAY book and rose this time from #6 into a tie at #4 with WGPR INC Urban AC WGPR (HOT), which slipped from #3.
The familiar smell of pine tar and freshly mown grass were a ratings aphrodisiac for WXYT as the station jumped from #6 to #1 18-49. This forced WJLB to take one small step back to #2, which had a ripple effect on WKQI, which slipped from a tie at #2 to #3. WMXD was unaffected by all these sports clichés as it posted its best book in over a year – pretty much the station’s theme this month – to take over sole possession of #4. WYCD’S book was good, just not good enough to keep the station from slipping out of a tie at #4 to #5. WDVD took a bit of a tumble as the station posted its lowest number since MAY and fell from a tie at #2 to #6.
Miami-Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood: The Heat Is Hot
Without digging deeply into the numbers for a definitive answer, one could make the case that the departure of MICHAEL BAISDEN from the airwaves of COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) could have caused the station to have a softer book than normal (9.2-8.7). Have no fear, it is still #1 but this is the lowest total it has received since JULY. Cluster mate COX RADIO Urban WEDR (JAMZ) was not able to take advantage, though it did a fine job remaining at #2 (6.5-6.4). UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) had a nice increase for the second straight survey (6.0-6.2) to keep the #3 spot. COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) stayed put at #4 even though it did end a two-book surge (5.9-5.4). After a brief respite, CCM+E Top 40/M WHYI (Y100) returned to the top 5 (5.1-5.1), which forced LINCOLN AC WLYF (LITE FM) to drop (5.2-4.9) from #5 into a tie at #6 with BEASLEY Top 40/R WPOW (POWER) (5.0-4.9).
For the fourth straight survey, WHQT took the top spot 25-54, this time by duplicating its previous month’s efforts (we dare our high school English teacher to diagram that sentence). Despite posting its lowest number since DECEMBER, WEDR held fast at #2. Last survey, three stations were clinging to a share of the #3 position. The news was good for one of them -- WHYI -- which is all by itself in that spot. WAMR was off slightly but still managed to move from #6 to #4. As to those other two former #3s, WPOW slipped to #5 while WLYF tumbled to #7.
The usual suspects assumed their customary positions 18-34. WEDR leads the pack by a wide margin as it ended a two-book slide. WPOW is currently on a three-book slide but held on at #2 ahead of WHYI, which has its own five-book slide to deal with. UNIVISION Tropical WRTO (MIX) is on a four-book surge, which has taken the station from #10 to its current location at #4. CCM+E Spanish Contemporary WMGE (MEGA) was completely flat but still slipped from a tie at #4 to #5. Two months ago, WQHT was #4 in this demo but it just posted its lowest number in over a year and sits at #8.
The rank order 18-49 remained completely unchanged this survey. WEDR was #1 for the eleventh book in a row while WHYI -- the only one of the five to have an up book -- was #2 for the fourth straight book. WPOW maintained at #3 comfortably ahead of WHQT at #4 and WAMR at #5.Seattle-Tacoma: Another Good Move
Last month’s command performance as the market’s new #1 station was so well received in the halls of SANDUSKY Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN’) the station decided to do it again and remained the market leader (5.5-5.2). However, the race is very tight as four other players are within a half share of the lead. CRISTA Christian Contemporary KCMS (SPIRIT) is on the road back and elevated itself from #4 to #2 (4.8-5.1). Close on its heels were SANDUSKY AC KRWM (WARM), which finally ended its post-HOLIDAY decline (4.7-5.0) to move from #5 into a tie at #3 with ENTERCOM Country KKWF (THE WOLF), which had its best book in over a year (4.9-5.0). This "best of" feat was duplicated by CBS RADIO Classic Rock KZOK, which made the athletic move from a tie at #9 to #5 (4.0-4.8). Not since OCTOBER has the UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON N/T KUOW had a share this low (5.3-4.6) and the station skidded from #2 to #6.
The 25-54 demographic seemed to be fashioning a lot of black t-shirts as it took on a decidedly rockfish patina. ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW remained at #1 for the second month in a row but is looking in the rear view mirror at KZOK, which rebounded nicely from an uncharacteristically bad book to jump from a tie at #7 to #2. KKWF might not be the alpha dog here but it did scratch out its fourth straight up book though it did slip from #2 to #3. KQMV also dropped a spot to #4 as did KCMS, which ended the month at #5.
While KKWF did not exactly duplicate its record-setting 18-34 performance from last survey -- it came pretty darned close and remained as the leader of the pack. KQMV was off slightly to remain at #2 though it is now tied with CCM+E Top 40/R KUBE, which crept up from #4. ENTERCOM Alternative KNDD (THE END) ended a two-book slide to move from a tie at #6 into a tie at #4 with CBS RADIO Country KMPS, which slid from #3 after posting its lowest number since JANUARY.
Looks like we have a good old-fashioned dog fight 18-49. KISW was up for the fourth straight survey to remain at #1 but was joined on the podium by KKWF, which is on a pretty substantial four-book run (or lope) of its own, which had led it from a tie at #11 to a share of the lead. KQMV had another solid book but slipped a spot to #3 while CCM+E Top 40/M KBKS (KISS) remained at #4. KNDD ended a two-book slide and moved from a tie at #7 to #5. Keep an eye on KZOK as the station jumped from #14 to #6.Phoenix: Compression Is The Word
Since taking control of the market in DECEMBER, thanks to the powers vested in it by one jolly old elf, CCM+E AC KESZ (99.9 KEZ) has refused to budge from the top spot. If you’re keeping track, this is the sixth straight book the station has been #1 (6.4-6.6). CBS RADIO Classic Hits KOOL remained at #2 though it saw its three-book surge come to an untimely end (5.6-5.2). Three, count ‘em, three stations are tied at #3. CCM+E Hot AC KMXP (MIX) was there before (4.7-4.4) while cluster mate CCM+E Talk KFYI-A moved up from #7 (4.2-4.4). Rounding out this trinity was BONNEVILLE Talk KTAR-F, which inched up from a tie at #4 (4.5-4.4). This is one seriously compressed market as eight stations are within .6 of each other. Witness UNIVISION Regional Mexican KHOT (LA NUEVA), which fell from a tie at #4 to a tie at #9 (4.5-3.8).
Before SANTA came to town, KESZ was sitting at #10 25-54. He came, he left and the station is still #1 all these many months later. For the fourth book in a row, KMXP held on to #2 even though it is on a three-book slide. KTAR-F scored its best book in over a year to leap from a tie at #9 all the way up to #3. CCM+E Country KNIX experienced enough of a ratings increase to move from #6 into a tie at #4 with SANDUSKY Rock KDKB, which strutted up from #5. Didn’t we mention compression just a few sentences ago? There are five stations tied at #6 and that list included SANDUSKY Classic Rock KSLX, which fell from #4, and KHOT, which dropped from #3.
Wow, there was some serious swapping and jockeying going on 18-34. First, let us introduce you to the market’s new #1 station -- RIVIERA Top 40/R KKFR (POWER), which made the death-defying leap from #6 to the top spot. This created yet another tie as three stations are now locked arm-in-arm at #2. We begin with last month’s #1 station -- KHOT -- followed closely by the previous #2 station -- SANDUSKY Active Rock KUPD. They were joined by CBS RADIO Top 40/R KZON (JAMZ), which crashed the party by climbing up from #7. Then there was KNIX, which was up for the second straight month yet fell from #4 to #5. KMXP had its lowest number since the HOLIDAY book to plunge from #3 to #7.
Last month’s three-way tie at #1 18-49 is now just part of market lore as only one station was left standing at the top -- KUPD. However, two other stations asserted themselves enough to forge an alliance at #2. CCM+E Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) moved up from #5 with its best book since NOVEMBER and was joined by KESZ, which strolled up from #4. As for the other former #1’s, KMXP slipped to #4 while KHOT dropped into a tie at #5 with KNIX.
Minneapolis-St.Paul: My, What Large Numbers You Have
There are six, count ‘em, six different stations that achieved a seven share or higher this month. CCM+E Top 40/M KDWB led the way for the fourth straight month by posting its best number in over a year (8.7-8.8). Not to be outdone -- by much -- HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95) was up for the fourth straight month (8.0-8.4) to remain at #2. Meanwhile, CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS had its best book in over a year (6.7-7.4) to leap from #6 to #3. This knocked Northwestern College Christian Contemporary KTIS back a notch to #4 (7.1-7.2). Two stations round out the top 5 in a dead heat and they both park in the same garage. CCM+E Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL-FM) dropped from a tie at #3 (7.1-7.0) while CCM+E Country KEEY (K102) stayed right where it was (7.0-7.0).
The top five 25-54 remained completely unchanged except for some ratings adjustments. KSTP was #1 for the second book in a row after posting its highest number since JULY. KDWB was also up a bit and remained at #2 while KQRS ended a two-book slide to hold on to #3. KEEY was up for the fourth straight survey to stay at #4 and KTIS was flat for the second straight month to remain at #5.
Sound the alarm! KDWB’s usually dominant lead 18-34 has shrunk to a mere four shares over #2 KSTP. Worth noting, KSTP has almost doubled its shares since the HOLIDAY book. CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X) was down for the second straight book but remained at #3 ahead of an equally slumping KEEY at #4. KQRS scored its best number since OCTOBER to move from a tie at #6 to #5. Last month, we were somewhat surprised that KQQL still held on to enough post-HOLIDAY audience to rank at #5 in this demo. Well, this month the station slipped back to #10.
As we saw in the previous demo, two stations stand clear of the pack 18-49. Of course, KDWB remained the market leader. KSTP continued its recent surge to solidify its hold on #2. KXXR was off slightly but stayed at #3 though it is now tied with KQRS, which moved up from #6. KTIS kept a firm grip on #5 but KEEY slipped from #4 to #6.
