By now the cat’s out of the bag and you’ve had some time to take a look at the top-line results of all the day two release markets for JANUARY. However, the Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC. take you on a deeper dive – a more behind-the-scenes look, if you will.
This survey covered 1/2-1/29 and these numbers are supplied for entertainment purposes only. Please, no wagering.
DETROIT: An 8 Share Above 8 Mile
Even by the lofty standards set by the denizens of the upper MIDWEST, this has been one damn cold winter. And, for a city that is used to a lot of snow, DETROIT got more than its fair share. Perhaps this is why CBS RADIO News WWJ-A had its best book since APRIL (or as they say in the MOTOR CITY – last winter) and moved from a tie at #3 into the top spot (6.4-8.4). Cluster mate CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC seemed to reap some benefit from ending its Christmas music foray as it posted its highest total since MARCH (5.3-6.9) to jump from #6 to #2. CCM+E Urban AC WMXD (MIX) was off slightly (6.7-6.6) and slid back a spot to #3. Did the arrival of a second country station cause CBS RADIO Country WYCD to score its lowest total in over a year (6.4-5.9) and drop it from a tie at #3 to #4? Well, CUMULUS Country WDRQ (NASH FM) did go up (1.4-1.9) as it moved from #21 to #18. CUMULUS Talk WJR-A also had its best performance in over a year (4.5-5.7) to rise from a tie at #8 to #5. The main Christmas station – CCM+E AC WNIC – took the expected step back (13.4-5.5) as it dropped from #1 to #6. However, the station was still in a stronger position than NOVEMBER (4.7, #8) and last year (4.7, #7). CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET) had its lowest number since MARCH (5.4-4.6) to fall three places in the standings to #8. Fret not, pitchers and catchers have already reported.
Over the last several surveys, WMXD had had some of its best 25-54 numbers ever. Though it was flat this time, the station did move into the #1 position. The news was huge as WWJ-A had its best book in over a year to rocket up the chart from #10 to #2. Three stations moving in different directions met at #3. WYCD was there last survey but just posted its lowest book in over a year while CCM+E Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) had its best book in over a year to move up from #6. Finally, WNIC lost over half its number to fall from #1 but is still better off than NOVEMBER (#9t) and last year (#9). CCM+E Urban WJLB ended a two-book surge to drop from #5 into a tie at #6 while WXYT-F had its smallest score in over a year to fall four places into a tie at #8. The new WDRQ moved from #20 to #17.
For the first time since MAY, WKQI was the #1 station 18-34, just edging out #2 WYCD, which, despite the presence of a format competitor, ended a three-book slide. Both stations were in double digits. WJLB had its best book since SEPTEMBER to move up a spot to #3 while WMXD had its highest total in over a year to edge up one notch to #4. GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF also had its highest mark in over a year to move up two places to #5. WNIC dropped from the top spot to #7, which was better than NOVEMBER (a tie at #11) but not quite as lofty as last year (#6). WDRQ more than doubled its share in rising from #17 to #11.
Now that SANTA is out of the picture, WYCD was free to assume its familiar position atop the 18-49 leaderboard – something it had done for six straight surveys prior to the big guy’s arrival. And, the station did this by being flat. Last book, there was a three-way at #3 but that did not repeat itself. WKQI ended a two-book slide to move up to #2 while WMXD had its best number in over a year to remain in place. WJLB had its best number since SEPTEMBER but slipped back to #4. WRIF ended a four-book slide to move up three spots to #5. WNIC dropped from #1 into a tie at #7 – a better place than NOVEMBER (#11) and about the same as last year (#7). The new kid in town – WDRQ – moved from #20 to #17.
MIAMI-FT. LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD: Minus Christmas But Not Minus Drama
As we belatedly learned last time, this was the rare market that did not have a full-time CHRISTMAS station. However, that did not mean the town lacked for drama. SBS flipped formats on one station for the second time in two months – SBS Spanish Contemporary WRMA (ROMANCE) – then flipped frequencies with SBS Tropical WXDJ (EL ZOL). The former went from unrated to a 1.6 at #20 while the latter remained at #7 (5.1-4.8). Then, in the middle of the book, COX RADIO Top 40/M WFLC (HITS) switched from Hot AC and ended up moving from #13 into a tie at #11 (3.5-3.4). None of this mattered as COX RADIO Urban AC WQHT (HOT) was #1 again even though it had its lowest total since SEPTEMBER (9.1-8.6). UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) remained at #2 with its lowest score since FEBRUARY (6.2-5.7) while COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) took sole control of #3 with its best tally since JULY (5.4-5.6). LINCOLN AC WLYF (LITE) ended a two-book slide (5.3-5.4) to move up a spot to #4. Two stations joined forces at #5. COX RADIO Urban WEDR dropped from a tie at #3 with its lowest total in over a year (5.4-5.0) while CCM+E Top 40/M WHYI (Y100) moved up from #6 despite a down book (5.2-5.0).
There was a bit of shuffling 25-54 but it did not affect the top two players. WHQT was up slightly to remain at #1 while WEDR had its lowest score in over a year to hold on at #2. WXDJ moved up three places to #3 despite a down book while WLYF also moved up three spots (to #4) despite being flat. WHYI remained at #5 even though it had its smallest number since JULY. The same could be said for WAMR though it fell three spots to #7. BEASLEY Top 40/R WPOW (POWER) had its poorest outing since AUGUST to sink five notches to #8.
The top five 18-34 participants remained unchanged though there was some alteration to the rankings. WEDR saw its string of double-digit books come to an end but it still took first-place honors. WPOW was down but still #2. WXDJ had its best book in over a year to move up two spots to #3, which bumped WHYI down one to #4 even though it was flat. CCM+E Urban WMIB (THE BEAT) – which was only three months old during this survey – slipped a spot to #5 with a down book.
Despite being on a four-book slide, WEDR held on to the #1 spot 18-49. However, two stations are hot on its heels – and neither is named HOT. WHYI was actually down but moved up a spot to #2 where it was tied by WXDJ, which was flat but moved up from #4. WHQT was also flat and moved up one spot to #4. WPOW had its lowest score since AUGUST and fell three places to #5.
SEATTLE-TACOMA: Three For The Price Of One
The race at the top of the leaderboard was tighter than RICHARD SHERMAN’s coverage on WES WELKER as three – count ‘em – three stations ended up in a tie at the top. HUBBARD AC KRWM (WARM) dumped the expected large amount of post-CHRISTMAS share (13.8-5.2) but remained a part of the #1 scenario for the fifth time in the last six books. Cluster sister HUBBARD Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN’) transported its best book since AUGUST (4.4-5.2) to move up from a tie at #4 while CBS RADIO Classic Rock KZOK moved up from #3 despite being flat (5.2-5.2). Close on their heels was UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON N/T KUOW, which parlayed its best book since MARCH (4.3-5.1) into a three-spot jump to #4. CCM+E Top 40/M KBKS (KISS) ended a two-book slide (4.4-4.8) but dipped a spot to #5. ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW also ended a two-book slide (4.4-4.6) but fell three places to #7. The other all-Christmas station – CRISTA Christian Contemporary KCMS (SPIRIT) – reverted to its previous form as it fell from #2 into a tie at #8 (5.7-4.1).
For the first time since JUNE, KQMV returned to the #1 position 25-54 with its best book since SEPTEMBER. KISW was flat but moved up a spot to #2 while KZOK slipped a spot to #3 with its lowest score since OCTOBER. KRWM’s post-holiday blues continued as it fell from #1 into a tie at #4 with KBKS, which moved up from a tie at #6 with its best book in over a year. As for WARM, it was sitting at #10 pre-SANTA but #1 a year ago. KCMS was down a bit as it fell from #4 to #6.
Back in JUNE, KQMV began a four-month run at #1 18-34. The station took a few books off but it just returned to the top with its highest total since AUGUST. ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC KHTP (HOT) was down for the third straight survey but remained at #2. KBKS moved up four places to #3 with its best book since JULY while ENTERCOM Country KKWF (THE WOLF) bounced back from an unusually down book to creep up a spot to #4. KISW ended a two-book slide and rose up one rung into a tie at #5 with CCM+E Top 40/R KUBE, which dropped from #4 despite posting its best number since SEPTEMBER. KRWM dropped from #1 to #7, which was better than NOVEMBER (#12) and exactly the same as last year.
KQMV made it a clean sweep as it took over the #1 position 18-49 with its highest number since AUGUST. KISW edged up a spot to #2 while KBKS jumped three places to #3. KZOK had its lowest number since OCTOBER but still managed to improve its lot by one to #4. KHTP posted its lowest share since the flip and dropped one place into a tie at #5 with KKWF, which moved up from #8 by ending a four-book slide. KRWM fell from #1 to #7, which was its position in NOVEMBER and below the #4 it had a year ago.
PHOENIX: Take It Easy
Just because CCM+E AC KESZ (99.9 KEZ) lost almost nine full shares of listening (15.0-6.3) was no cause for alarm as the station remained #1 overall. It was also #1 a year ago albeit with a slightly beefier 6.9 share. Cluster sister CCM+E Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) picked up its best book in over a year (4.3-5.5) to move up a spot to #2. This displaced HUBBARD Classic Rock KSLX to #3 even though it ended a two-book slide (4.7-5.1). CCM+E Hot AC KMXP (MIX) had its highest total since JULY (4.0-4.9) to move up two spots to #4 while CCM+E Country KNIX remained at #5 after ending a three-book slide (4.1-4.7). HUBBARD Active Rock KUPD had its best showing since SEPTEMBER (4.2-4.4) but still dropped from #4 into a tie at #6.
The top two stations 25-54 were the same as the previous demo. KESZ lost a lot but remained at #1 with exactly the same number it had exactly a year ago. KZZP has more than doubled its share in the last year and just moved up a spot to #2. KUPD dropped back to #3 despite posting its highest score since JULY while KSLX remained at #4 even though it picked up its best share in over a year. KMXP and KNIX switched places, with the former scoring its best book since JULY to ascend to #5 while the latter was up but still fell to #6.
KZZP simply had a monster book 18-34, claiming the top spot with authority – to the tune of over two shares – over RIVIERA Top 40/R KKFR (POWER), which moved up a spot to #2 with its highest total in over a year. KESZ fell from #1 to #3, which was a far sight better than NOVEMBER (#9) and a near sight better than last year (a tie at #4). KUPD had its smallest showing since JUNE to drop a spot to #4 while CBS RADIO Top 40/R KZON (LIVE 101.5) held steady at #5 despite bringing in its best book since SEPTEMBER.
KZZP’s monster book continued 18-49 as it owned a number more than double last year’s and moved from #3 to #1. KUPD remained at #2 with its best book since JULY while KZON ended a four-book slide to edge up to #3. KESZ dropped from #1 to #4, which was a bit better than NOVEMBER (#5) but not nearly as spectacular as last year (tied for #1). KMXP rode its best book since JULY to a two-place jump to #5 while KSLX fell a spot to #6 despite posting its best score since MAY.
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL: Back To Basics
So, SANTA takes the short trip back to the NORTH POLE and all that did was allow CCM+E Top 40/M KDWB to return to #1 (9.2-9.4). Besides this being the station’s best book in over a year, it is interesting to note that despite the presence of an all-CHRISTMAS station, KBWB’s ratings did not vary much during that period. Two stations moved up to spend some time together at #2. U OF NORTHWESTERN-ST. PAUL Christian Contemporary KTIS had its best number since APRIL (6.5-7.0) to edge up from #3 while HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95) rebounded from an uncharacteristically low book (6.1-7.0) to move up from #5. CCM+E Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL 108) lost more than half its share (13.8-6.5) as it slid from #1 to #4. This was better than NOVEMBER’s #10 but not as robust as last year’s tie at #3. CCM+E Country KEEY (K102) also bounced back from an atypical down book (5.3-6.4) to move up two places to #5. CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS was down for the fifth consecutive survey (6.2-6.1) as it fell from #4 to #7.
Like old man river, KDWB just keeps rolling along 25-54 as it shook off two surveys’ worth of figgy pudding to return to #1 for the first time since NOVEMBER. KSTP saw its 10-book run at #1 end at the hands of the evil elves but bounded back from a very low HOLIDAY book to inch back up to #2. KQRS ended a two-book slide to move forward one space to #3 while cluster brother CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X) had its finest hour in over a year to advance three squares to #4. CCM+E Sports KFXN (KFAN) ended its two-book losing streak to edge up one spot to #5 while KTIS fell back to a tie at #6 with a flat book. KQQL dove from #1 to #8, which still left it in a better position than NOVEMBER (#11) but a bit lower than last year (#7).
KDWB continued to dominate the market 18-34 even though its share decreased a bit after SANTA exited the scene. KXXR ended a three-book slide to edge back up to #2. The two Country stations were locked in at #3 with KEEY rebounding from a soft survey to move up from #5 while CBS RADIO Country KMNB (BUZ’N) was down but still advanced one place. This was the first time in the last four books that KMNB was not the country leader. Two stations advanced their causes and ended up at #5. CCM+E Hot AC KTCZ (CITIES 97) had its best book in over a year to move up from #8 while KSTP bounced back from a down book to inch up from #6. KQQL dropped from #2 to a tie at #10, which was equivalent to NOVEMBER but far behind last year (a tie at #4).
Completing the quadruple play, KDWB captured the 18-49 flag with another market-dominating performance. KXXR moved out of a tie at #3 into the #2 spot with its best book in over a year while KSTP remained at #3, rebounding from a poor book. In a rare moment of cosmic convergence, five stations were locked in bondage at #4. KMNB fell from a tie at#3 with its lowest total since MAY while KTIS moved up from #8 with its best book since APRIL. KEEY flew in from #9 while KQRS jumped in from #6. Finally, KFXN rebounded and started the fast break by moving up from #7. KQQL cooled off, falling from #2 to #11. This was better than NOVEMBER (#13) but worse than last year (a tie at #6).
This ends our review of the JANUARY survey. Thanks for reading. We’ll be back again next month. In the meantime, if you ever have any questions about your station or situation, please feel free to reach out to the Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC.
