The evolving story of the JULY survey continues with our third and final installment of ratings reviews. The Ratings Experts at RESEARCH DIRECTOR, INC., along with the numbers crunchers at XTRENDS, are proud partners in this production.
For scorekeeping purposes, this particular book covered JUNE 19th through JULY 16th. Contained within that range was the JULY 4th holiday, which had the potential of altering listener behavior over two weeks. Of course, your mileage may vary.
DETROIT: Yeah, That’s The Ticket
Being on the TIGERS beat has been very beneficial for CBS RADIO Sports WXYT-F (THE TICKET). Though the station was down for the second straight book (7.3-7.2), it remained #1 for the third month in a row. And, this all just happens to coincide with the baseball season. The rest of the top five batting order remained as it was. CBS RADIO Classic Hits WOMC was #2 with a slight dip in share (7.0-6.8) while CCM+E Urban AC WMXD (MIX) was in the three hole (6.6-6.4). CBS RADIO Country WYCD was off slightly in the #4 clean-up spot (6.2-6.0) while CBS RADIO News WWJ-A held on at #5 with a small gain (5.6-5.7). Something special is happening with GREATER MEDIA Classic Rock WCSX. Though the station remained at #6, it was up for the fourth straight book (5.3-5.6). During that run it has added two full shares and moved up seven places in the standings. Another station on a run, though it was more modest, was CUMULUS Country WDRQ (NASH). It was up for the third straight book (2.4-2.5) and moved forward one step to #17.
WXYT-F picked up a few more runs this time to remain in first place 25-54 – kind of like the local boys of SUMMER. Cluster-mate WYCD was flat to remain at #2 while WMXD experienced the same flat feeling at #3. WCSX continued its recent roll by posting its best book in over a year for the second month in a row as it stayed at #4. CCM+E Top 40/M WKQI (CHANNEL 955) was flat but managed to move up one square to #5. This forced GREATER MEDIA Active Rock WRIF back one spot as the station acquired its lowest share since MARCH.
This marked the seventh straight #1 18-34 book for WKQI. Though it was down for the fourth month in a row, it did manage to widen its lead over #2 WYCD as that station was down even more. CCM+E Urban WJLB remained at #3 but did end a three-book slide while WXYT-F was flat and steady at #4. WOMC came off its amazing (for this demo and format) share from last month but managed to move up a spot to #5. WRIF had its smallest number since the HOLIDAY book and fell back two places to #6. WDRQ was flat and fell from a tie at #10 into a tie at #12.
While the presence of a direct competitor may have affected WYCD’s 18-49 shares, it doesn’t seem to be having a great impact on the station’s rank. Though it was off a bit this time, it was #1 for the second straight book. WXYT-F elevated its game slightly and moved up a spot to #2 while WKQI slipped to #3 with a flat performance. WJLB had its highest share since JANUARY to move forward one step to #4 while WOMC made a two-step improvement to #5 with its best book in over a year. WRIF took a small hit and slid two places to #6 while WMXD suffered a similar fate in moving from a tie at #5 to #7. WDRQ was flat and dropped a spot to #16.
MIAMI-FT. LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD: The Song Remains The Same
The top five spots on the leaderboard remained frozen in time for this survey. As per usual, COX RADIO Urban AC WHQT (HOT) was #1 this time with its best showing since MARCH (7.9-8.2). UNIVISION Spanish Contemporary WAMR (AMOR) was #2, ending a short two-book surge (6.5-6.2). The #3 place holder remained with LINCOLN AC WLYF (LITE), which actually had its highest share since NOVEMBER (5.8-6.0). CCM+E Top 40/M WHYI (Y100) was flat (4.8-4.8) to remain at #4 while at #5 COX RADIO AC WFEZ (EASY) had its lowest share in over a year for the second month in a row (4.7-4.6). The only station within shouting distance of that quintet was COX RADIO Urban WEDR, which moved up a spot to #6 with a flat book (4.2-4.2).
There was quite a bit more movement 25-54 but one thing that did not change was WHQT’s appearance at #1. The station had its best book since FEBRUARY. WHYI took over sole possession of second place despite a slight loss of share. WAMR moved up one to #3 even though its share was down a smidge. WLYF moved up three places to #4 with its best book of the year. SBS TROPICAL WXDJ (LA MUSICA) had its smallest share of the year and dropped out of a tie at #2 to #5. The two stations locked in arms at #5 last survey took some steps backward. WEDR slid to #8 with its lowest total in over a year while BEASLEY Top 40/R WPOW (POWER) ended up in a tie at #9 after suffering the same ratings fate.
For the fourth book in a row, a new station was #1 18-34. In this case it’s one that has been there before. A lot. WEDR had its best book since the last time it was #1 – APRIL. WHYI had a strong rebound from a down book to move up to #2 while WPOW had its smallest share in precisely one year as it fell from the lead and landed at #3. CCM+E Urban WMIB (THE BEAT) was still at #4 despite posting its best share since MARCH. Cluster amigo CCM+E Spanish Contemporary WMGE (MEGA) also moved up a spot – to #5 – with its best book in over a year. WXDJ had an amazing ratings reversal from the previous survey and dropped from #5 to #8.
About the only thing that remained the same 18-49 was WHYI’s continued presence at #1. This was the third straight time this has happened even though the station was down for the second book in a row. WEDR ended a four-book slide and moved up a couple of places to #2 while WHQT had a three-spot improvement to #3 with its best book since FEBRUARY. WLYF had its highest share since NOVEMBER and was rewarded with a three-place jump to #4. Three stations were locked in at #5. WAMR remained in place with a slight decrease while WPOW fell from #2 with a decrease that was bigger than slight. UNIVISION Tropical WRTO (MIX) had its best book since SEPTEMBER as it moved up from #9. WXDJ’s woes continued as it fell from a tie at #2 into a tie at #8 with its lowest total since NOVEMBER.
SEATTLE-TACOMA: Back And Forth
For the last three books, two stations from the same cluster have taken turns being the market leader. This month’s honors went to HUBBARD Top 40/M KQMV (MOVIN’), which moved up thanks to its highest share in over a year (5.9-6.4). Cluster sister HUBBARD AC KRWM (WARM) was gracious enough to take a step back (6.3-5.7). This was also the widest margin any leader has enjoyed during that span. CBS RADIO Classic Rock KZOK returned to more familiar ratings turf (4.1-5.1) as it jumped from #7 to #3. ENTERCOM Country KKWF (THE WOLF) took over sole control of fourth place with its best book of the year (4.5-4.9) while CRISTA Christian Contemporary KCMS (SPIRIT) dropped two spots to #5 even though it was flat (4.8-4.8). ENTERCOM Active Rock KISW was off for the third straight survey and slid three places to #7 (4.5-4.2). This was the first survey under the new commercial rules for ENTERCOM Alternative KNDD (THE END) and while it is too early to call it a trend, the results were encouraging. The station had its highest share in exactly one year (3.0-3.3) and moved from a tie at #17 into a tie at #14.
Even though it was down for the second straight book, KQMV was #1 25-54 for the third month in a row. Last month appeared to be a disaster for KZOK as the station fell from #3 to a tie at #7. Well, it appears it was merely a flesh wound as the station moved from that tie at #7 to #2. KISW has been on a three-book spiral and fell this time to #3. Prior to that, the station had spent four months at #1. The two-way tie at #3 was broken but neither party was necessarily happy about that. KKWF ended up at #4 despite its best book in over a year while KCMS landed at #5 with a slight increase in share. Last month’s #5 twosome did not end well for either party. KRWM dropped a spot to tie at #6 while CBS RADIO Adult Hits KJAQ (JACK) ended up at #8.
Make it three demos in a row at #1 for KQMV. The station remained on top 18-34 with another large share. KKWF took a big bite out of MOVIN’s lead by increasing its share by about a third as it moved into the #2 position. Perhaps there may be something to this fewer commercials thing. KNDD had a rather large share increase and moved from #8 to #3. It has more than doubled its share since JANUARY when it was sitting at #12. KISW has fallen hard over the last three books and dropped two spots to #4 with its lowest share since JANUARY. CCM+E Top 40/M KBKS (KISS) lost some share and dropped a spot to #5. The three-way that was at #5 last time went kind of south. CCM+E Top 40/R KUBE slipped to #6 while KJAQ dropped a little further to a tie at #7. ENTERCOM Rhythmic AC KHTP (HOT) had its lowest share in this formatic incarnation and fell into a tie at #11. KCMS has quietly been making some noise. The station was in a tie at #7 with its best book in over a year. As recently as FEBRUARY, it was languishing in a tie at #20.
Let’s call it a clean demo sweep for KQMV. Though it was flat 18-49, it remained #1 for the third consecutive survey. KKWF moved up to #2 with its best book in exactly a year while KISW slipped back to #3 with its lowest share in over a year. KZOK rose from the ashes of the previous month to move from a tie at #8 to #4. This bumped KBKS back to #5 and KCMS to #6.
PHOENIX: Desert Kool
CBS RADIO Classic Hits KOOL has been on quite a run in 2014. The station has been up or flat in every single stinkin’ survey and reached its high point in JULY (5.7-5.9). That propelled it back to #1 for the first time since NOVEMBER. CCM+E Country KNIX stepped back to #2 as it could not duplicate its best book of the year (6.2-5.6). Cluster sister CCM+E AC KESZ (KEZ 99.9) dropped back to #3 with its lowest total of the year (6.0-5.3). The cluster act continued as CCM+E Hot AC KMXP (MIX) fell to #4 with its smallest share since JANUARY (5.8-5.0). RIVIERA Hot AC KMVA (HOT) scored its best book in over a year (4.0-4.6) and moved up from #7 to finally crack the top five. HUBBARD Classic Rock KSLX was flat (4.5-4.5) and fell a spot to #6. Tongues must be wagging at CCM+E Talk KFYI-A as the station had its best share since SEPTEMBER (3.2-4.3) as it moved up five places to #7.
Two stations ascended the 25-54 throne at the very same time. KNIX inched up from #2 despite a slight loss of share while HUBBARD Active Rock KUPD moved up from a tie at #4 after rebounding from its lowest number of the year. CCM+E Adult Hits KYOT (THE MOUNTAIN) continued its growth spurt as it moved forward to #3. Last month’s market leader – KMXP – fell back into the pack and ended up at #4. KSLX had its second straight down book and dropped two spots to #5. KESZ fared a little worse in dropping four places into a tie at #8. KOOL again had its best book since NOVEMBER to rise one rung to #7.
For the fourth month in a row, KUPD was #1 18-34 and actually enjoyed a comfortable lead over the new #2 player. That was RIVIERA Top 40/R KKFR (POWER), which had a huge share bump and moved up from #6. KMXP was up slightly to remain at #3 while KNIX dropped two spots to #4 after losing a big chunk of share. KESZ slipped to #5 with its lowest number since MARCH. CCM+E Top 40/M KZZP (KISS) has really fallen off the wagon. As recently as MARCH, it was #1 for the third book in a row. Now, it landed in a tie at #6 with its lowest share in over a year. A couple of stations were bubbling under and worth keeping an eye on. KMVA moved from #13 to #8 with a solid book while HUBBARD Rock KDKB jumped from #15 into a tie at #9 with its best showing in over a year.
KUPD returned to the #1 18-49 position it abdicated last month, ending a two-book slide in the process. This bumped KNIX back to #2 where it was forced into a tie with KMXP. KMVA moved up two spots to #4 with a strong book while KYOT was on fire. It easily had its best book since the flip and moved from #12 to #5. KZZP slipped again and dropped to #6 while KESZ took a three-step drop to a tie at #7 by losing a decent chunk of its previous share.
MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL: Come A Little Bit Closer
CCM+E Top 40/M KDWB clung to its #1 position for the second straight book (8.9-8.4) but was hearing footsteps from CUMULUS Classic Rock KQRS, which moved up to #2 (7.7-8.1). You may recall that in MAY, the latter actually beat the former. HUBBARD Hot AC KSTP (KS95) broke the fourth-place tie from last month and moved up to #3 despite a down book (7.3-7.1). The other half of that tie was CCM+E Classic Hits KQQL (KOOL) and it remained in place (7.3-7.0). CCM+E Country KEEY (K-102) had been flat or up since FEBRUARY. That trend ended as the station fell three places to #5 (7.8-6.7). This allowed their sworn enemy – CBS RADIO Country KMNB (BUZ’N) – to narrow the gap considerably as it posted its best share in over a year (6.0-6.6) and moved up to #6. Something’s happening with CCM+E Hot AC KTCZ (CITIES 97). The station was up substantially for the second book in a row (5.4-6.2) as it rose to #8.
The 25-54 demo has been ruled by only two stations for most of the year. This time, KQRS regained the lead over KDWB as the former had some solid growth while the latter had its smallest share since SEPTEMBER. CBS RADIO Adult Hits KZJK (JACK) remained at #3 despite some lost share. KSTP maintained its grip on #4 despite its smallest book of the year. KQQL remained at #5 by being flat. KTCZ continued its roll. Over the last three books, it has gone from #11 to #8 to #6. In the country war, KEEY dropped a spot to #8 while KMNB remained close behind at #9.
KDWB was down for the fourth straight book 18-34. That said, it was still in double digits and still held a commanding lead over CUMULUS Active Rock KXXR (93X), which turned in its lowest number since MARCH. KMNB was down slightly to remain at #3 while KEEY was down more than slightly with a tie at #4. KMNB has been winning this battle since the stations were tied in JANUARY. KSTP moved up from #6 to claim that other share of the #4 position while KZJK stepped back to #6 with a slight loss.
The rich get richer. KDWB continued to dominate 18-49 even though it was down for the fourth time in a row again. The gap widened over #2 KZJK as that station posted its lowest share since MARCH. KSTP and KXXR swapped places at #3 and #4. Not surprisingly, the former’s shares went up and the latter’s went down. KMNB had its best book since DECEMBER to move up to #5 while KEEY shed a bit of share as it fell two places to #7.
