BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started at KUBA in Yuba City decades ago, then became a Boss Jock at KOBO in Yuba City, where I became PD. Then I was the first PD/morning host at KKIQ in Livermore CA. I worked for lots of stations in the Central Valley of California: KROY-A, KPOP, KRAK-A, KNCI, KGBY, KFMR, KJOY-A/F and KJSN, to name a few. I was nationally syndicated with Concepts Productions. And I've done acting with Suspect Murder Mystery Theater in Old Sacramento for many years.
1) How are you occupying your time, besides looking for a job?
Spending a lot of quality time with my wife (she's SO ready for me to find a job), Facebooking with old friends and reading a lot.
2) Some people get discouraged or enlightened with the business when they actually step out of it for a while. Tell us your observations from the outside.
It is hard to stay positive because so many stations are operating with so few full-time employees. In the past, talent was the only benchmark but now the focus is on everything but the on-air sound.
3) Do you plan on sticking with radio?
That is my main goal because I love this business and it is what I do best. Talking on the microphone at a drive-thru just doesn't have the same appeal!
4) What's the longest stretch you've had on the beach?
A few months is the longest time I've gone without a gig. This is like an overly long vacation I can't afford!
5) What has been your best resource for finding out about job openings?
My Facebook friends, AllAccess jobs, TVandRadiojobs and CalJobs, but my wife is making me a sign: "Radio DJ Will Talk For a Job." Maybe that will work.
6) How are you finding the "courtesy level" at places you've applied?
Apparently very few have the time to respond in any way, but those that have were friendly but not friendly enough to want to meet me in person!
7) What do you miss most about music/radio?
Interacting with the listeners.
8) If you were offered a similar position to what you were doing for considerably less money, would you seriously consider taking the job just to stay in the biz?
It would be difficult but I think I would ... but my wife has a giraffe collection addiction that needs feeding!
9) Having been through all you have dealt with in this biz, what advice would you give people trying to break in?
Hone your skills in computers and social media.
10) How will this experience change you when you get back to work?
I will be sure to keep a recent aircheck on hand at all times!
Bonus Questions
Care to contribute a low-cost recipe to our "ON THE BEACH" cookbook?
Crock Pot Cacciatore is really easy to make and it tastes great!
Place cut up chicken pieces in the crock pot with a grated or sliced carrot. Pour in a jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce (I prefer a Sweet sauce with bell peppers). Add seasoning to taste (Italian seasoning, basil and garlic etc.) Serve over cooked egg noodles.
