It is gratifying to see many radio stations starting to think about podcasting. With the proliferation of smartphones and changing audience expectations, on-demand needs to be part of commercial radio's wheelhouse.
The most elusive part of getting started in podcasting is the good idea. And that, of course, is where all content success comes from.
With all of the audio content out there these days, it is hard to think that another show about movies or cooking or sports will be a breakout hit.
Some of the biggest podcasts out today started by filling a perceived content void. Top podcasts are about horror stories, health, crime, money, comedy, love, being a better person, interviews, business... The list goes on and the topics are varied, but each of the most successful podcasts shares the same code - they engage an audience with content that is original and difficult to duplicate.
Sometimes, in the creation of content, I have found it helps to think "outside of the bun" beyond the radio.
Colleen Ballinger is a YouTube sensation. Her character Miranda Sings has 7 million subscribers and over 1 billion views. Most of her content originates from her home. And this past week she debuted a new Netflix series, Haters Back Off.
