Whether as a host or co-host for a morning show, or as a promotions and marketing brain, there are few who I've worked with who have that endless flow of ideas, no matter the situation, station or format like Sarah Lee Owensby.
Sarah Lee was offered a promotions job for a radio cluster in Nashville, a job she decided not to take, but she shared with me the three ideas she sent to that cluster's Rock PD.
Sarah Lee up CLOSE and Personal with SNL’s Pete Davidson, really close. As both a host and promo person, Sarah Lee knows how to do events that get coverage by TV; and the three below would certainly do that, plus the social media whirlwind.
With her permission, I share them with you.
1. THE PINTWOOD DERBY
The Pintwood Derby is an event that sounds exactly like what it is. It's the old Cub Scout Pinewood Derby, now appealing to the person it appealed mostly too, even back when you were a Cubs Scout, the older male in the house, the one who had to actually envision, whittle, sand and paint the Pinewood Derby for his tyke, the 35 year-old male.
Money making angles: Car Dealerships for car giveaways. Beer Sponsors for title sponsors. Bars to hold events at. Hobby Lobby and/or other places where you can find that block of wood to whittle and race.
Many ways to enter: Win the opportunity through web, on-air, etc...which would get you the car making kit for free from us, or GO TO your closet, find your old Pinewood Derby and let it ride again....OR go to the store and buy the kit.
Show up with a car, and you're in.(as long as it passes the weight and size requirements, of course) Entice the event, by weekly grand prizes, leading to the final day of the race where they win ... the car, the trip, the cash, the trophy...
OR...do it at WILD WING, on RACE DAYS only, with race fans winning race merchandise, etc...
PRESS RELEASING this event is a guarantee that it will be the kicker story on the nightly news, and then, there's the opportunity for viral action...dads doing things that only kids have done up until now.
2. THE NASHVILLE COMMON MAN HOME-RUN DERBY
I promise, not every idea of mine will be a derby, but the first two to pop in my head when I thought of a Rock audience and the target demo and listener are only common by the name DERBY. The ideas are not similar.
Budweiser, a big sponsor of the Nashville Sound could be a part of this, or anybody else... LOUISVILLE SLUGGER, since they're not that far down the road, and others, but this is it. Every year, around July, the MLB All-Star Game is kicked off with the Home Run Derby.
Whether you see it, or care to see it, you can't help but find clips about it online, or on Facebook and Twitter.
So, why not OWN our OWN, except these aren't ballers, but just Tom, Dick and Harry from Spring Hill, Brentwood, or Hendersonville, all showing up to take a couple whacks from the plate at the SOUNDS game. Perhaps two hours before the game, we have access to the field in approved fashion to do this thing.
Maybe it's our night and after the game, an artist of ours is playing a short set to cap off the night? Maybe THAT artist ALSO takes a couple of whacks.
Do this a day before, or a couple days BEFORE the MLB does theirs, so that when they do theirs, ours sticks in their heads, whether they were able to see it, win the opportunity to be a part of it or whatever.
MONETIZE IT
Money making angles: Sporting Goods stores as point of entry, in store or online, for a price to have our promos say go to DICKS.com. The SOUNDS. Budweiser, maybe it's LOUISVILLE SLUGGER night for the first 5,000 kids to win a little bat, or a home run-themed video game.
Bar nights to win opportunities to be one of the finalists to hit could take place with those computerized pitching/hitting mechanisms, etc...
Maybe there are opportunities to put together a theme night for anyone on a softball or baseball team to attend events/parties, being of legal age of course.
THIS ONE WORKS, because it takes care of a common male fantasy to JUST SEE if they could hit one out of a real baseball park, and if they do...they will have VIDEO of that forever.
3. PREGNANT MOTHERS' BIKINI CONTEST
While this idea is not my own, it is one that when I first heard of it, it stuck with me, to be used if I ever worked with stations that targeted men.
There is a phrase that says that pregnant women are the "most beautiful women" in the world. And that's sweet and everything, but now we put that theory to the test, in a LABOR DAY WEEKEND event, and it is what it is.; a pageant to find the hottest pregnant mom.
Starting after July 15th, we begin promoting our search for the most beautiful of the most beautiful, with short web videos of our contestants.
Rules will state that the mothers have to be 5 months along or more.
Money making angles: Maternity... out of target demo, but NOT out of the question because most mom's got that way because of one of our target listeners hitting the sperm shot jackpot. Bars, title sponsors, social websites, etc. are all potentials for tie-ins. The online action on the videos will reap great web and social media reward for the station.
Baby Stuff. toys. clothes. diapers. daycare, etc. Gerber food, photography studios and the like. Maybe the event is actually in a mall!?
