Grace notes:
LARRY HOPPEN, lead singer of ORLEANS, has died. He was 61 and no cause of death was revealed. Larry didn't write any of the band's hits, like "Dance With Me" and "Still The One," but he was the voice blasting out of your AM radio in the 1970's. Orleans is celebrating its 40th year and continues to tour. But, because of Larry's death, an appearance on Friday's "Fox & Friends" has been canceled, along with a few upcoming concerts. (Marino)
Checking the Food Chain:
Flies having sex is a risky proposition because they're so doggone noisy about it --at least to bats.
Researchers say the racket the flies make with the wings helps bats find them easier, and what that means for the bats is they get twice the helping when they catch flies --ya know-- doin' it.
That's especially good for the bats since the study found that they don't seem to notice flies walking on a ceiling or just sitting.
Bottom line: Though there aren't many studies showing this but copulating insects are at a higher risk of being eaten by predators. (Maiman)Broadcast, cable and video news:
The big TV story yesterday --NBC has already made around a billion-with-a-b dollars in money from the commercials they've sold for play during the two-week-long Olympics, which begin Friday. The Hollywood Reporter says around $6.5 million of that will be coming from PRESIDENT OBAMA's re-election campaign.
Designer Update:
MADONNA's first-ever shoe collection is hitting stores this fall. Glamour magazine says her "Truth or Dare" footwear collection is everything you'd expect from Madonna: lots of studs, stilettos and over-the-knee boots. There will be at least 60 styles to choose from, ranging from $89 to $349 at Nordstrom and Macy's stores.(Bartha)
Gossip Central:
JENNIFER ANISTON really is in love with JUSTIN THEROUX. Pals tells Star magazine that she's put him in charge of her money and financial future and he's actively trying to double it for her with new investments and opportunities. (Myers)
Anniversaries:
PAUL REUBENS, better known as "Pee Wee Herman," was arrested in a Sarasota, Florida, adult theater for exposing himself during "Nancy Nurse Turns Up The Heat" (1991).
