Overnight Briefing & General Reality Check - Nov 6, 2013
November 6, 2013
Top talkables of the day:
Over the weekend, two planes full of skydivers crashed into one another some 12-thousand feet in the air, yet everyone on board somehow lived. That's a pretty cool story on its own, but since we had no images of the incident, we all had to use our imaginations to picture the skydivers leaping from certain doom to miraculous safety.
Not anymore, however, as some incredible, breath-taking helmet-cam footage of the crash has been released. NBC News reportedly paid over $100-thousand dollars for the exclusive video taken directly by the divers themselves.
What you'll notice is that one of the planes more or less bellyflopped on the other, after a pair of jumpers had already made their way outside onto the wing. Then there's an explosion and a fiery free fall, for the plane and the parachutists.
The skydivers each described the crash to the network. "It was unpleasant," said one. "I had no time to react.... The sound behind me, I'll never forget. And that's all I could do was try and stay forward and try not to move because I knew I was going to live where I was, or thought I could."
Said another: "I'll remember this one more than most." So will we. (Maiman)
Trash talk and satellite dish:
RICHARD SIMMONS may need a refresher course in etiquette. Sources tell RadarOnline.com the fitness guru didn't pay his bill at a Palm Springs nightclub last weekend, then balked when a restaurant tab came to $1400 for over a dozen people. Apparently he worked out a fair price with the manager, but made staff very nervous by dancing on the table and yanking on the joint's custom lighting. (Lee)
MILEY CYRUS has a new tattoo --of her grandmother!
"LA Ink" star KAT VON D --who's already done three other tatts for Miley-- did the job in black and white on her lower arm and Miley immediately showed it off on her Twitter feed with the note that she picked "mammie because I am her favorite & she is mine." It's her 18th tattoo.
SEAN PENN has a celebrity crush. The actor tells Star magazine of JULIA ROBERTS, "She could make on-screen eating sexy... even if the food got stuck in her teeth."
Phone starter: What celebrity could you watch read the phonebook? Put me down for JOE MANGANIELLO and SCOTT EASTWOOD! (Myers)
If Celebrities Are Doing It, Then It Must Be a Trend... Personalized I-D necklaces are suddenly all the rage. OLIVIA MUNN, NICKY HILTON and EMMA ROBERTS have all been spotted wearing gold-plated bars designed by Lola James Jewelry. SheFinds.comsays the "Alter Ego" necklace goes of $125 dollars. And it can be personalized with names, symbols or your favorite words of wisdom. (Bartha)
Taking everything much too seriously:
Warning: note content:
A Canadian man is on trial in Dubai for allegedly cursing at a mall employee.
The unidentified 43-year-old is charged with telling a customer service rep to "F--- off". His defense? That phrase isn't considered much of an insult in North America. The man's lawyer told the court, "F--- off is commonly used when a person expresses themselves metaphorically and asks another person, who angered them, to walk away."
The United Arab Emirates has laws against profanity. It's not clear what his punishment might be if convicted. (Still)
