Anniversaries:
75 years ago, "The Wizard of Oz," starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton, opened across the U-S (1939).
Dep't of Homeland Insecurity:
Gamblers... watch your back! Cops in Las Vegas now say al-Qaida is targeting the city as a potential terror target by jihadists.
FOX5 TV in Las Vegas reports the publication Palestine lists specific targets like nightclubs and casinos to rack up mass casualties in the section about building and using car bombs.
DORON BENBENISTY, the owner of Counter Terrorism Training School in North Las Vegas, says Vegas has always been a target, since there's an international airport there as well as a very dense population. But, he said, people should not be afraid, but aware and "Preparing, being proactive, that's the key role that needs to be played to prevent [attacks]."Sucking the life out of the wire services:
MARY CASAMENTO has a special place waiting for her in heaven after turning in WAR MACHINE last weekend. TMZ.com reports Ms. Casamento was staying at the same hotel as the MMA fighter and saw a bloody, injured woman running out of his room. She immediately called the authorities and the men in blue apprehended the fugitive, who is accused of brutally beating adult film star CHRISTY MACK.
While most folks would be living high on the $20,000 reward, Mary is dying of cancer and decided to give the cash to a battered women's shelter in Santa Clarita. Half of the money came from Christy's family while COREY HARRISON from "Pawn Stars" ponied up the other ten-grand. (Lee)Fashion Emergency:
Frequently naked supermodel KATE MOSS is about to have her breasts immortalized into a set of champagne flutes. (Of course she is!) The NY Daily News says British artist JANE McADAM FREUD ("Freud?" Really?) has been commissioned to take a mold of Kate's décolletage. The actual glasses will be in heavy rotation at 34 different restaurants in London. (Bartha)
Chapman parole denied:
MARK DAVID CHAPMAN, who murdered JOHN LENNON outside his NYC apartment at the Dakota in December of 1980, has been denied bail again.
Chapman got 20-years-to-life for shooting the former BEATLE when he pled guilty to second-degree murder. This is the eighth time he's been up for parole. The NY Daily News reports the three-person Parole Board panel denied Chapman's request because of a concern that he would commit more crimes and that his release would be "incompatible with the welfare of society.Hot punks in the Summertime:
An act of vandalism in Russia is being called "one of the world's most expensive pedicures."
Pranksters painted the toenails of the statue of Satyr Playing the Flute at Russia's Gatchina Palace Museum. Officials estimate it will cost around $66-thousand dollars to remove the nail varnish. That's because the nail polish caused a chemical reaction to the statue's marble. A museum spokesman explains, "It probably only cost pennies for the small amount of nail varnish that was used, but it's going to cost a small fortune to clean it all off." There are no suspects in the crime, since the museum lacks security cameras. (Still)Grace notes:
When MARIAH CAREY hits the road for her upcoming tour, she'll be taking the kids and leaving her soon-to-be-ex-husband NICK CANNON at home. The Confidential gossip column in the NY Daily News says three-year-old twins MOROCCAN and MONROE will see the world with their mother, while Nick is expected to fly out and meet Mariah on certain stops to hash out the details of their divorce. "The Elusive Chanteuse Show" tour begins October 4th in Tokyo. Mariah blames Nick for her latest album's poor sales. Only 100-thousand copies were snapped up during the week it was released and Mariah said she turned down many opportunities to promote it while Nick kept on working. (Marino)
