The Stock Market:
As you might have expected, the stock market has already reacted to the whole Ebola scare, and it's apparently driven up prices for stock in Tekmira Pharmaceuticals, since that company was given a green light by the US Food and Drug Administration last month to provide its experimental Ebola drug to test subjects with "confirmed or suspected Ebola virus infections."
CNN Money reports the company's stock went up 18 percent yesterday --and it's up 180 percent since July. It's already been given one test, since RICHARD SACRA, the American missionary infected with Ebola in Liberia, was given the drug last month before being released from the hospital where he was being treated in Nebraska.Looking at Logos:
Adweek reports Coca-Cola's "Share a Coke" personalized-bottle and can campaign over the summer helped turn around a decade-long sales decline. Coke sales are up more than 2.5 percent. The campaign is ending in the U.S. but Coke bosses are strongly considering bringing it back next summer. The packaging started in Australia in 2011, and people have hunted on eBay for cans with names. One couple even used it to announce a new family member.
The first marketing for Coca-Cola was done through coupons and free samples back in 1887. (Kaye)Trash talk and satellite dish:
Is the "Rock Star from Mars" rearing his ugly head once again? Rumors are swirling that CHARLIE SHEEN is up to his old tricks and ticking off the big wigs over at "Anger Management." While his rep tells RadarOnline.com he injured his face by jumping into the wrong end of his and had to take a week off, insiders claim this sounds like the beginning of another meltdown!
The warlock has been raising eyebrows after firing his longtime bodyguard as well as dancing and making erratic gestures down a busy street. (Lee)Designer Update:
STELLA McCARTNEY designed a range of hot pink lingerie in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Fashionista.com says models like KATE MOSS turned out for the campaign. A percentage of the profits will benefit the LINDA McCARTNEY Centre in Liverpool. It was established in 2000 in honor of her mother's passing from breast cancer. (Bartha)
Olympics:
The city of Oslo, Norway, has dropped its bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics after the Norwegian government decided it wouldn't provide any financial backing for the Games. That leaves just two cities --Beijing, China and Almaty, Kazakhstan-- vying to host the 2022 Games, after Stockholm, Sweden; Krakow, Poland; and Lviv, Ukraine, pulled out earlier.
Grace notes:
It's good to be KATY PERRY's pal. Star magazine says that when she turns 30 on October 25th, Katy is taking 60 of her friends to Egypt! The 10-day birthday party includes a private plane, rooms in a five-star resort, a cruise down the Nile and more sightseeing fun. Since Egypt isn't exactly safe these days, Katy has hired a team of ex-Navy SEALS as security 24/7. What will all of these cost Katy? Around $4-million dollars. But, she can afford it and loves to make her friends happy. (Marino)
