Overnight Briefing & General Reality Check - Apr 20, 2015
April 20, 2015
Smoke 'em if ya got 'em:
Today's National Pot Smoker's Day, which takes place every year on April 20th, or 4-20.
So where does the 420 come from and what does it mean? Nobody really knows the real story behind the 420, but it's a relatively well-established code for pot smoking.
Some people believe 420 originated from a police code that announces marijuana use is taking place (not true). Another rumor is that it somehow ties in to Hitler's birthday (it *is* Hitler's birthday, but has nothing to do with it besides coincidence).
Another myth is that there are approximately 420 active chemicals in marijuana (Actually, there are approximately 315 active chemicals in marijuana, but the actual number goes up and down depending on which plant is used).
Basically, there is no real reason for the "420" use except to signal that you're a marijuana user, and "420" is used as a code by pot smokers to talk about weed without tipping your hand to parents or teachers. And 4:20 pm is now used as the "traditional time" to fire one up.
Security will be high for today's 119th running of the Boston Marathon, being right in the middle of the trial of DZHOKHAR TSARNAEV in Boston as well. The 12 jurors and six alternates in the trial have been banned from attending the race by U.S. District Judge GEORGE O'TOOLE.
Police have asked spectators not to bring large bags or coolers, and will search any such packages along the route as well as banning any drones over the Marathon.
The race has attracted more than a few world class runners competing for the $830,500 in prize money.
Another @$#%* Press Release:
Starbucks freaks can now revel in all the joys of camping without pitching a tent or getting their hands dirty. A rep for the java giant revealed to Us Weekly that their latest concoction is the S'mores Frappucino --a drink that features graham crackers, coffee, milk, ice, milk chocolate sauce and is topped with marshmallow-infused whipped cream and graham cracker crumble.
The treat will be available as a prepared drink on Tuesday, April 28th, while the bottled version is already for sale at some stores. (Lee)
Target's launch of its Lilly Pulitzer fashion line gummed up its websites and left the retailer's racks empty as high demand for the designer floral prints left many shoppers empty-handed. The Lilly Pulitzer rush recalled a similar retail meltdown four years ago when Target released another product line from Italian luxury knitwear designer Missoni. Target's website crashed repeatedly and in-store shoppers were met with lines and sellouts. USA Today says the launch of the Lilly Pulitzer for Target line on Sunday "created pandemonium at stores and online. Merchandise quickly sold out, leaving many shoppers angry and annoyed." (Bartha)
Looking for love in all the wrong places:
Dating in Dubai is ten times worse than "Survivor." A Lebanese businesswoman said she met a man in Dubai and they were getting to know each other. Exactly 10 days after that, he proposed to her. While she didn't turn him down, she didn't say "yes" either. After a few more dates where he claimed he forgot his wallet and she had to pay, she realized that something was a bit "off" about him. He demanded the pin code to her phone so he could look through it anytime. He also told her that if she didn't accept his proposal, he would put scandalous things about her on Facebook.
His terror didn't end there either. He broke into her flat and verbally and physically assaulted her. He asked the judge to give him some time to get a defense lawyer and his trial resumes May 10th. (Myers)
