Back to the Future Day:
Today was the day (Oct 21, 2015) --in the movie "Back to the Future, Part II"-- when Marty McFly, Doctor Emmett Brown and Jennifer Parker (played by MICHAEL J FOX, CHRISTOPHER LLOYD and ELIZABETH SHUE, respectively), arrived in Hill Valley, California at 4.29 pm to "do something" about Marty and Jennifer's kids --with disastrous results. Yes, it's Back to the Future Day, marking what Dr CARL SAGAN called the "greatest time travel movie ever made."
The original film is now 26 years old and (of course) people have been keeping score of what actually came true in the movie. A short list of things that did:
--big-screen TVs
--virtual-reality goggles
--drones
--computer controlled door locks
--Marty's high-tech sunglasses are kind of like Google Glass
--Self-lacing shoes (Nike has an upgraded version of the 2011 Nike MAG, a limited-edition replica of Marty's sneakers. The new footwear will feature "power laces," in which motorized rollers in the shoe's sole sense weight and tighten the laces when someone steps into the shoes, according to Nike's patent.
--o--
Not happening:
--Mr. Fusion (creating energy from waste)
--"Jaws 19" (although nobody could have predicted "Sharknado")
--pizza hydrators
--selfie-taking refrigerators
--o--
Still to come:
--According to the film, the Chicago Cubs win the World Series in 2015, but that's looking a bit questionable, since the Mets now have a 3-0 lead in the playoff series.
--small Hoverboards, although Canadian inventor CATALIN ALEXANDRU DURU actually has what he calls an Omni hoverboard, using downward-thrusting propellers, and powered by a dozen lithium polymer batteries. He currently holds the world record for the longest hoverboard flight. There are also companies making a Lexus hoverboard and skateboarder TONY HAWK was filmed trying out a Hendo hoverboard as well.
PS: There are screenings of "Back to the Future II" in 1700 theatres across the country tonight for you fans who wanna mark the occasion! Some theatres will also be showing the first and third films as well. Amazon Prime members are also able to stream all three "Back to the Future" movies for free this month.
PPS: And how about a DeLorean? There's some for sale in various parts of the country, for between $32-to-$35-thousand dollars. The Reel Deal:
Variety reports comedian CHRIS ROCK is in "serious talks" to host the upcoming 88th Academy Awards, which are scheduled for next Feb 28.
This would be the second time Chris has hosted the event; he was also the host in 2005. Last year's host was NEIL PATRICK HARRIS; ELLEN DeGENERES hosted in 2014, SETH MacFARLANE in 2013, BILLY CRYSTAL in 2012 and JAMES FRANCO and ANNE HATHAWAY in 2011.Taking everything much too seriously:
If you've always wanted to look like a vampire, this guy in New York can help you out.
He goes by the name FATHER SEBASTIAAN and he creates dental prosthetics that can give anyone that bloodsucker look. Sebastiaan has been creating custom pointy canines for 20-years, ever since he became fascinated with the ANNE RICE vampire books. But, he's more than just a hobbyist. He says, "My grandfather was an orthodontist, my aunt is a practicing dentist, and I'm a trained dental technician."
But, achieving that LESTAT or DRACULA look this Halloween won't come cheap. Sebastiaan's custom-made vampire choppers sell for between $130 and $260-dollars. -
