The Weather:
Hurricane Patricia has developed rapidly into a "potentially catastrophic" Category Five storm that could sweep waves of almost 40 feet onto Mexico's Pacific coast today.
The storm is due to hit the big tourist areas of Puerto Vallarta and Manzanillo today, and experts at the National Hurricane Center said it could unleash deadly rip currents along with "life-threatening flash floods and mudslides."
Patricia is only the second Category Five hurricane to hit the Pacific coast since record keeping began back in 1949. The remnants of the storm will bring lots of rain to Texas after it sweeps through central Mexico.Culture Shock:
The Federal Communications Commission says you'll be able to talk to your favorite prisoner for less now.
The FCC says the high calling rates --which could be up to $14 a minute in some cases-- would be slashed and capped a 15-minute in-state or local call at $1.65. The new rules also affect inmates in federal and state prisons as well.
NBC News says ALEKS KAJSTURA, the legal director at the Prison Policy Initiative, claims the new rates will benefit society as a whole, and not just those serving time. "Studies show keeping communication in between families members and incarcerated loved ones reduces recidivism, and that helps us all," she said.Idle gossip & unconfirmed rumors:
Those rumors about PARIS JACKSON headed to the altar just won't quit. This time, a "friend" of the family tells RadarOnline.com that they're quite nervous about protecting her late father's fortune which could be worth over two-billion-bucks! The 17-year-old is head-over-heels for soccer CHESTER CASTELLAW, reportedly counting the days 'til she's legal and ready to tie the knot when that happens. (Lee)
Fashion Emergency:
REBEL WILSON is releasing her first-ever fashion line next week. The "Pitch Perfect" star has teamed up with Torrid stores on a 31-piece line People Stylewatch says is "urban, preppy, pretty and badass." The line includes dresses, varsity jackets, leather pants, shirts and handbags. The full line hits Torrid stores November 1st. (Bartha)
Thanks, global warming!:
Another month... another temperature record shattered. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says September 2015 was the hottest September ever in NOAA's 136-year recorded history! That takes us all the way back to January 1880.
A major El Nino in the Pacific is impacting global temperatures. But with records being broken almost every month this year alone, Discovery News says these records are a sign of how much Earth has warmed due to the continual buildup of heat-trapping greenhouses gases in the atmosphere. Six of the 10 highest temperature departures from average ever have occurred in 2015. (Bartha)Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
JUSTIN BIEBER will perform at the MTV Europe Music Awards on Sunday. This year's event happens in Milan, hosted by ED SHEERAN who will also be performing, along with "Orange Is The New Black" star, RUBY ROSE. TAYLOR SWIFT has eight nominations. MTV will show the awards sometime in the next few weeks. (Marino)
