The White House:
PRESIDENT OBAMA sits down with ANDERSON COOPER for a live CNN "town hall meeting" on gun control tonight at 8 pm (Eastern).
One interesting sidebar: ELLE magazine celebrated its 30th anniversary since its American debut last fall, and its September 2015 issue compared the viewpoints of 30-year-old women from 1985 to those of 2015's 30-year-olds. Interesting results to the questions on guns (and it should be noted the 2015 data were gathered over the summer):
Women who favor the registration of all handguns:
In 1985... 77 percent
In 2015... 62 percent
--o--
Women who favor banning the sale and possession of handguns:
In 1985... 48 percent
In 2015... 32 percent
Primarily a fashion and style magazine, ELLE caters to an aspirationally affluent urban female reader, with a decidedly left-leaning editorial staff. (Kaye)Powerball rolls over:
No winner in last night's drawing for the Powerball Lottery. That means Saturday night's drawing is valued at $675 million ($413 million cash value). Powerball is played in 44 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the U-S Virgin Islands. Chances of winning the grand prize (all five numbers plus the Powerball) are one in 292.2 million.
FYI: This is not only the largest Powerball jackpot ever --it's also the largest jackpot of any lottery game in US history. Until now, the largest Powerball jackpot was $590.5 million, won by a Florida woman in May, 2013. Ticket holders in New Jersey and Minnesota shared a $448 million jackpot in August, 2013. But the former record-holder was a $656 million Mega Millions jackpot won in March 2012.Idle gossip & unconfirmed rumors:
MISS COLOMBIA may finally be getting a brand-new tiara! Sources tell TMZ.com that ARIADNA GUTIERREZ has a big-time new manager that could land her a new commercial for Burger King (wait for it...) where everyone gets to keep their crown, as well as a spot for Corona beer. Word is her big dream is to become a Victoria's Secret angel and --coincidentally-- her wheelin' and dealin' new rep has another Colombian client named SOFIA VERGARA. (Lee)
On, off and way-off-Broadway:
Oh, my... GEORGE TAKEI's Broadway musical is closing. Playbill.com says "Allegiance," based on his experiences with his family during World War II will give its final performance on February 14th. It will have given 37 previews and 113 regular performances. Producers say a national tour is in the works, along with an international production. (Marino)
