Track and Field:
So the high jump isn't top-of-mind for sports fans, and certainly not female high jumpers. But the HIGHEST high jumper in the world in 2016 so far IS a female, and is a lock for the Rio Olympics barring an injury or major upset, at the tender age of 18.
Her name is VASHTI CUNNINGHAM and she cleared 6 feet, 6 1/4 inches (1.99 meters) at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships in Portland, Oregon, on Saturday, smashing the world junior indoor high jump record. Her coach was in the stands holding up motivational sayings.
Her coach is also her dad --former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback RANDALL CUNNINGHAM. (Kaye)Grace notes:
PRINCE's ex-wife is cleaning out her closets. NME.com says MAYTE GARCIA is putting a bunch of items that once belonged to her ex-husband up for sale. Nate D. Sanders Auctions opens up the bids on March 17th for Prince's 1959 Gibson acoustic guitar. It's purple, of course. Also for sale are some of his costumes, a set of handcuffs, handwritten lyrics and the 2.2-karat diamond engagement ring he got for Mayte. It's expected to sell for $100-thousand dollars. (Marino)
TV Briefs:
Look for that variety series starring MAYA RUDOLPH and MARTIN SHORT to premiere May 31 --at the beginning of summer. Executive-produced by "Saturday Night Live's" LORNE MICHAELS, NBC is calling it "Maya and Marty in Manhattan," and KENAN THOMPSON will also star on the show as well.
No word on whether you'll be able to see it in a studio audience, but word is it'll air from studios in 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City.Taking everything much too seriously:
A base jumper has successfully parachuted from the tallest building in the European Union.
Witnesses saw an unidentified man leap from the Shard building in London Saturday. Video shows the guy deploying a parachute and landing safely on the street. After the jump, he reportedly ducked into the subway before police could catch up with him. It's the first recorded base jump from the spire-shaped structure, which was completed in 2012. (Still)Your Body:
Uh-oh, guys --you may have to bite the bullet and wake up with the kids next weekend because science just proved that women need more sleep than men! A new study from Loughborough University in England discovered that poor shuteye is associated with high levels of psychological distress and greater feelings of hostility, depression and anger for females, but gentlemen don't experience the same symptoms. JIM HORNE from the schools' Speech Research Center tells Metro UK that women's multi-tasking is to blame --ladies' brains are wired different than their male counterparts, their noggins are "more complex" and the need for quality REM is "slightly greater."
