Diseases and Dat Boid Flu:
A norovirus outbreak has been reported among GOP convention staffers in Cleveland. As of yesterday, Scientific Americansays as many as 11 members of the California delegation's advance team --all staying at the same hotel in Sandusky, Ohio-- are showing symptoms that are consistent with the norovirus. The virus is highly contagious, which means there will likely be more convention-goers getting sick as the week goes on. Norovirus triggers explosive vomiting and diarrhea; most people recover quickly after one to three days. The Erie County health department in Cleveland is running tests to confirm whether the Republican staff members have norovirus. (Bartha)
Overheard on Sunset Blvd:
There's a new version of the classic movie, "Cooley High" in the works and Variety says rapper COMMON will produce and star in the remake. The original film was done in 1975 --and starred GLYNN TURMAN and LAWRENCE HILTON-JACOBS as a couple of high school seniors in 1964. No word on other stars for the film, yet.
Locked Up for their own good:
It was almost Snakes on a Plane for real on a recent flight to Saudi Arabia.
Authorities say a man was caught trying to smuggle ten baby snakes onto a plane in Jakarta, Indonesia. KOUFIAH JIHAD ZAKI allegedly tried to board a Garuda Airlines flight but security saw something wriggling in his pants as he passed through the x-ray. That's when the serpents --pythons to be exact-- were pulled from the man's pants. He's now in police custody pending an investigation. It's unclear what happened to the snakes. (Still)Grace notes from Vinny Marino:
Here's the latest on TAYLOR SWIFT's cell phone slamdown with KANYE WEST. TMZ.com said she was going to have him arrested because recording a phone call without permission from the person on the other end is against the law. But, if you watch the entire video, Taylor knows she's on speaker phone because producer RICK RUBIN joins the conversation at one point, along with a few other people who were hanging out in the studio. So, Taylor was being overheard and continued to speak with Kanye. That means he didn't break the law. (Marino)
It may make you angry, but no one will be able to prevent DONALD TRUMP from using "We Are The Champions" during the Republican National Convention. There were official Tweets from QUEEN and the song's publisher threatening the campaign with legal action, but it's a done deal. As long as the RNC paid the performing rights organization BMI to license the use of Queen's recording, then the committee doesn't need the band's permission to play it. Now, if a DVD or Blu-ray of the convention is sold, and "We Are The Champions" is heard in it, that's a different story. Then, the RNC would need permission and pay a fee. Trump will also not be able to use the song in any campaign TV or radio ads for the same reason. (Marino)
