Health and Medical Briefs:
People diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have smaller brain volume than those without the disorder. CNN says the differences in brain volume were identified by reviewing brain scans that compared people without ADHD to those with the disorder. ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder. It can cause inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. More than one in 20 people younger than 18 is affected by the disorder, and two-thirds of people affected have symptoms into adulthood.
The researchers discovered that overall brain volume --and in five regions in particular-- were smaller in people with ADHD than in other people. The biggest difference was found in the brain's amygdala. That's the part of the brain responsible for emotions. The other parts of the brain affected included: the caudate nucleus, the putamen, the nucleus accumbens, and the hippocampus. The brain differences were most prominent in the brains of children with ADHD and less obvious in the brains of adults with the disorder. (Bartha)Taking everything much too seriously:
Arkansas --come for the hospitality, stay for the executions!
A jewelry store in North Carolina reportedly offended people by saying "It's OK to throw rocks at girls."
Arkansas has a mandatory citizen requirement to witness executions. They have eight coming up over a 10-day period and are short of people so they are asking for volunteers to witness the lethal injections.
Want in? Volunteers must be at least 21, resident of the state and have no felony criminal history. (Myers)

Spicer Greene Jewelers in Asheville printed the message on a billboard. Photos of the advertisement have been circulating online, causing backlash from groups who feel it promotes violence against women. Store owner EVA-MICHELLE SPICER says, "I'm truly sorry that it offended anybody, that was not our intention." She says the billboard was meant to be nostalgic. Also, "throwing rocks" simply means "giving diamonds to."
In response, Spicer promised to donate 10-percent of sales to a local domestic violence shelter. (Still)Anniversaries:
Gatorade is celebrating its anniversary this week. In case you didn't know, the first of the so-called "energy drinks" was originally developed at the University of Florida to quench the thirst of Gator football players (1965). The Gators football team first used Gatorade during the 1967 season and went on to win their first Orange Bowl title, beating Georgia Tech, whose coach, Bobby Dodd --when asked why they lost-- replied: "We didn't have Gatorade. That made the difference." Gatorade used to come in glass bottles until 1998, when they switched to plastic. The first Gatorade "dunking" by a pro football team was during the 1986 season, when the NY Giants made a practice of it after wins under (then) head coach BILL PARCELLS.
