Waffles & Ice Cream
June 6, 2011
I'm always very happy for the merchants down the Jersey shore when the weather is perfect for the beach. A rainy weekend spells doom for someone trying to sell fresh cut fries, funnel cake, pictures with a cut out Snookie, and tickets to ride the Thunderbolt. Some families feel the Boardwalk is more traditional than Disneyland, others love its cheesiness and enjoy it for what it's worth. My Grandfather literally owned two hotels on the Boardwalk way back in the 50's. I still picture him as that millionaire guy from the Monopoly. My summer memories include a lot of beach and sand and cotton candy. I knew how to twirl it, sell it and eat it.
The jobs the Jersey shore bring, especially to women are abundant: servers, maids, managers, ticket takers, waffle maker, and life guard are on the list. On the other side there are women on the beach enjoying the salty water with their families and desperately trying to keep enough sunscreen on their little ones so their skin does not burn. Or, they are trying to tame their teenager or manage a tween who is firing to use her last cents to try and win a framed photo of Justin Beiber from the water gun relay game. The merchants on the boards hawk their fare as they should; sans the rain it's a much better picture with Snookie.
