Open Mic Night

My daughter has been performing at every coffeehouse open mic she can get her guitar into. Seeing how she's not driving yet I too have been accompanying her to these gigs. I love the atmosphere, it's very hipster and chill. We usually go after work so I need to make a mental note to wear my cooler clothes on this day so I'm not sticking out when I'm waiting to be the loudest one to cheer my kid on. This crowd is Gen Y to the max, lots of flannel, jeans and Tom's shoes. Unusual hats and hair bows are the hottest, most distinct fashion accessory, and coffee is their drink of choice. What mom could have a problem with this?
I hear a lot of cliches when it comes to teens from people who don't have them and mostly they are wrong. The teens I come across are smart and seeking balance plus excellence in their passion. They are also quick to volunteer for an organization or to help one and other. Sure moms need recognition for the grueling schedule most advertisers have plastered the airwaves with, but they also need to be removed from assumption. Raising kids takes a lot, yes, but the good stuff needs to be applauded as many are raising some really great kids. Don't be so surprised or allow a couple of negative stories to take away what's really up inside her house. Our future leaders are coming from somewhere.
