While my neighbors are vacationing in Italy my daughter is caring for their toy poodle; Lucy. Let me rephrase that, I'm making sure my daughter is caring for their dog. Don't get me wrong my kid is very responsible but there is also much responsibility that goes along with caring for any pet let alone someone else's. Especially this pet as it's my neighbors "only child" and they could not bring themselves to putting her in a kennel. My neighbor gave me three pages of written instruction right down to the groomer's number should Lucy accidentally walk through a mud puddle.I've got crates and treats and toys and leashes, it's crazy the amount of stuff this animal needs to live comfortably. It's similar to what you have to lug around for a baby. I used to do stuff like this for babysitters for my first child then it all started to taper off as the kids kept coming. You've heard it; the first baby gets the sterilized pacifier by the third child your picking it up off the floor, wiping it on your pants and putting it back in the babies mouth. They say dogs are the predecessor for a couple before they have a child. The love and maintenance required prepares you for more or less, it depends on the couple. I've a friend that has a dog instead of a child because she does not feel she'd be a good parent. Right now I'm in the cat phase of my life and let me tell you these animals think they own me. Truthfully they provide my kids with a cuddly calm companion which I find irreplaceable. So the next time you are staring at the cute little face in the pet store window go in and give it a pet. But don't look at me for your kennel needs, my hands are full.
