Knowing that summer is here! I remember my days as a student: I clearly had no desire to do any school-related work. Walking around barefoot, sleeping in late, working a fun part-time job, it all seemed so much better than writing a research paper and studying for a calculus class final. The end of the year called for much discipline and patience. It's was a crucial time for students because they need to do well on their final exams. Now, my kids are feeling some of the same things I did. My 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Meinzer, used to take us outside to study when the weather was nice in the spring. She trusted us to handle the privilege and if it weren't for Raymond Brogan, who just couldn't stop doing cartwheels, we would have enjoyed many more such outings. Raymond wasn't much better in the classroom. He and Robert Dudzinski were the spitball kings, continually chewing paper and making it fly out of their mouths into someone's hair. The lesson remains; it only takes one person to make, change, and affect the plans of many. Just one person to start a wave at the ballpark, and one to finish the last piece of birthday cake I was saving for a midnight snack.
