You have probably heard about Pinterest by now, but if you haven't, you will very quickly. The latest social site darling is being driven by the fact that specialty apparel retail traffic from Pinterest grew from July to December 2011 -- almost 400%. Plus, almost 80% of the traffic is driven by women.
So what is Pinterest?
A virtual bulletin board that allows users to share images and links they find interesting or inspiring, which become "Pins" on thematic boards that can be customized around any topic.
How is it used?
It is all about images. So naturally, a business that is great at using photography, graphics and other visual elements are the early winners here. However, remember that research shows around 30% of the population are visual thinkers: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visual_thinking
So, as you integrate Pinterest into your brand portfolio of tools, how can images work for you?
- As a focus group for testing logos, graphics, merchandise and so on.
- As a crowdsourcing option for graphic and/or photography elements.
- As a preview for upcoming appearances and events.
- As a visual story around a promotion and/or giveaway.
- As a "behind-the-scenes" area for posting personality and insider photos.
Here's a nice article from Web Pro News on using Pinterest, including a great infographic: http://www.webpronews.com/marketing-with-pinterest-2012-02
The thing to remember is that Pinterest, like all the others, is not a replacement for anything. It should be used in an integrated fashion, to capitalize on the platform/site/tactic strength to uncover another piece of the story, and feed the others to build deeper engagement for the overall strategy -- never to just re-purpose content to yet another touchpoint.
So get stuck in a moment and make a social impact for your brand, as it comes to life in a fun, unique and visual way.
