It has been a sad and amazing week in the Northeast as Hurricane Sandy made a major impact on the entire area. As someone who lives in New York City, I have been personally touched by the stories that have tragic loss, but also of acts of heroism. One thing that every disaster reinforces for all of us is that when people are in need, others step up to help in ways that truly represent what life is all about.
In that spirit, I wanted to offer an idea for the music, radio and entertainment industry to help out. We've already seen NBC do a great job in featuring some of the biggest performers, coming together, to raise over $23 million for the relief effort.
But in thinking about how there is always room for an alternative idea or position, I would propose this one for the country artists and formats.
Maybe a theme like ... "Come Home With Us."
Have the artists come together for one night to help raise funds to rebuild homes throughout the area that were damaged, or destroyed during Hurricane Sandy. However, unlike the NBC telethon, everything is done through online video streaming.
People would simply make a donation for access to watch the event where artists perform an acoustic song or two live from their homes to help rebuild the homes of others. The event would switch from one place to another as each perform throughout the event.
I love that not only would you experience a moment that can truly make a difference for people in need, but you also get access to your favorite artists opening their homes to come inside, go behind the scenes, and see them in an environment like never before.
It will make a social impact and once again use music to bring people together and touch lives like nothing else can.
