Lose To Win
September 27, 2011
Sometimes you have to go backward to go UPWARD.
Just ask anyone who has ever accomplished anything of value in life. They will glowingly tell you about all the failures on the way to the ultimate success. We all have our own stories that prove this to be true.
LOSE, GO AROUND
General U.S. Grant, fighting to a loss/draw against Robert E Lee's army in 1864 three separate times during the Overland campaign, first at the Wilderness, then at Spotsylvania, then Cold Harbor, did the unthinkable. He simply backed away each time, disengaged, and went around to the left. He kept doing this knowing that he could win a war of attrition because the North had more resources than the South, so he could basically siphon off men and equipment from the South and eventually end up a winner that way. The strategy paid off. Grant didn't disband the army after he lost. He moved ahead and fought again.
Failure is nothing more than a temporary condition, a condition to be used for RE-ADJUSTMENT. If you "Fail," do what Grant did: Disengage for a moment, take a look at the situation, learn from it, back up and just go around.
The greatest way to turn a loss into a win is to scoop up everything that can be learned from the loss, then use it as valuable knowledge going forward.
NEVER GIVE UP
The lessons are there. Winners always have losses just like everyone else. The difference is that the winners are the ones who learn from their losses. They are not doomed to repeat loss after loss after loss because they do their homework and understand that every action is what causes the outcome. They take the loss, gather the lesson, and move forward for the next win.
Gathering that lesson is not always easy. Dealing with reality is more difficult than living in the make-believe world that caused you to lose in the first place. I found this out when in an investment; I lost every penny of life savings I owned at that point in my life.
Looking back today, I wouldn't have it any other way because it was the BEST learning experience I could ever have hoped for. It taught me so much, plus it made me struggle very hard. When I had scratched and clawed my way back to the previous savings level I had when I lost it all, I then knew that my investments would be better, smarter. I got the lesson, and went around.
As I became more in tune with how winners think, it became obvious that this was not a strange story at all. In fact, it is fairly common among winners. They have all "lost it" and gained it back, that's part of life. And they all say the same thing: Never Give Up.
DON'T GET DOWN, GET UP!
Ever lose? Of course you have. But that's not really the issue, because EVERYONE loses. It's what you do NEXT that matters. Does the loss STOP you, or do you GET UP and push ahead?
Next time you suffer a loss, you know what to do!
